Two things. First, we do plan on probably adding a Diamond Shop item to Re-Generate a Starter Pet at some point down the road. Although, I realize that doesn't really help you atm.

Second though, a Starter Pet is the same as a Generated Pet and there is no limit to the amount of pets you can Generate. All you will need is an Essence to Generate a new pet of your liking. Also, you can release your Starter Pet, but only once you've completed the first Region as, yes, it would make it much harder for you to complete the first Region w/o using your Starter Pet.

So my suggestion would be to just keep going through the first Region and once it's complete, you can release your Starter Pet if you like and should probably have enough resources to acquire a few new other pets - get them leveled up - and run missions in order to get enough Gold for an Essence. Alternatively, you can nurture other pets each day as a chance to get an Essence for free.

About the essences, I had no idea that you could earn them from nurturing. I also didn't know that you could buy them with gold. If I ever earn one of those, I'll be super careful on the next pet I generate.

If the color of your starter is the problem, you can also dye it (with a few dyes). It may be hard to get enough, though!
