-This article assume the reader already knows the basics and won't go into too much detail regarding them-

I'm not too sure on how breeding on this site works out yet, but it is based of Mendelian genetics, this should be useful. :3

In Bio I learned the old fashioned way to test for genes.

If you don't want to spend gold to have your wild catches tested in hopes that they carry one trait you're looking for, this might be useful to you. (however the process takes time)

1. First decide what gene you want to test for.
2. Get a male (females work too, but usually a male would be easier- this will be referred to as "T") of the species that you are wanting to breed that SHOWS the gene you want.
3. Cross "T" with the Sylesti with unknown genes. (3-4 times would be best) (let's refer to your unknown Sylesti as "U")
4. Observe new Sylesti (here's where the time comes in) (let's call this one "B").
5. If "B" displays the gene, then "U" is a carrier. If "B" or no other offspring (B2. B3, B4) show the mutation, then the mom does NOT have the gene you are looking for.

This works this way because a Sylesti that displays a gene has to have the two recessive alleles for it. A Sylesti that doesn't display the gene is either heterozygous dominant or homozygous dominant. The test Sylesti "T" can ONLY give a recessive gene whereas "U" can give either gene. This test can only get the results you need if one of the parents is a gene displayer.

For ex.
Let's use my Sylesti Xziin:

As you can tell he displays both the Cheetah Spots and Tundra Fur. This means I can use him to test for either or both traits.

This is the unknown Sylesti, Kris:

If I crossed Kris and Xziin a few times and none of the offspring displayed a gene, then I know that Kris isn't carrying that particular gene. However, if one of the offsprings had spots, I'd know that Kris carries them. (as Xziin can only give a recessive allele)

Here is a reason why one has to use a Sylesti that displays the gene one is looking for. Meet Frost:

Frost is not displaying any traits nor does he carry any. If I were to cross him and Kris I wouldn't get any offspring that displayed a gene. Which means that I'd think that Kris wasn't carrying any genes when she actually is. This would mess up my research. (It is possible that if you do cross a pet that doesn't display any traits with another and you could to get an offspring that displays traits, however this method is not as straightforward and requires many more trials to get the same result. It's not recommended to use a non-displaying test Sylesti.)

If you have any questions feel free to ask. :3

Edit: New DATA found.

I have recently had Kris's genetics tested. Previously to this I had tried using the generator to test a possible outcome however no one ever showed any markings. However, after the genetic testing, it was revealed that she did have markings. I tested the generator again and the offspring expressed genes.

This proves my hunch that the generator will only show results if the genotype is known. Darn. XD

Wow. I love how Frost looks like. Simplified and easy to understand. Great job!

Thanks, I did my best to make it easy to understand. :3 Also thanks for Frost's compliment. I caught him yesterday. ;D (I can't wait until Kris is an adult because her and Frost produce stunningly pretty kits. )
