I know what they are and what they do, but I am clueless on how to get them. I'm feeling ridiculously stupid since this is the second question I asked today.

On sylestia essences are one way to get pets. You can gain an essence by purchasing one with gold, nurturing hatchlings or egglings, by doing missions (found at the barracks in any town), or from battles.

How many times do I have to nurture an egg/hatchling to get an essence? Is it random?

Am I gonna do it in just one sylesti? Becuase I've been doing it over and over with on separate sylesties with no luck (like 45+ times -.-)
Two
Is it usually a ton of nurture clicks? And if you click on one breed (ex. Griffi) over and over it will give you the essence?

It can be thousands of nurture clicks or it could be only a couple of hundred - completely random.
Yes, the essence you get will match the sylesti you were nurturing when you were awarded the essence. As a result, if you knew you only wanted Nixi essences, you could focus on only nurturing Nixis :)
I'm not quite sure what you mean by question one? Essences are random and quite rare - I got one a few days ago from a Mission Satchel but I think it was at least a couple of weeks before that when I got the second last one.
