Okay, so I keep on getting diamonds, and this happened like 12 time already, and I'm not getting and coins from it. I also get many trophy combinations that are worth money, but get one or two coins. Why is this?

It starts counting "how many in a row" from the left column, going from left to right. So if say you had a diamond in the utmost right column, it would be worth 0 gold. The only exception is the trophies, which are 1 gold per trophy in any column.
For more information though, the game is designed so you will gain gold the more you play it. Though the most reward comes from the mini game when you align 3 staffs. Hope that helps. ^^
