You can go to your profile the click on your pet, If your pet is in your party it may be easier.

You can't get the 3rd party slot until you've unlock the 2nd region Umbra Forest.

The main thing to remember is to choose between strength and intelligence. If you add any points to strength, don't add any to intelligence. Same goes for intelligence, if you add any to that, don't add to strength. Choose only one. That's because strength adds to physical damage, and intelligence adds to magical damage, and your pet will only use one. So any points added to the other would be wasted.

Likewise, choose a proficiency tree that matches what you want to add to the stats.

For equipment, use those that add more to the stat you've chosen, instead of splitting between both/all stats. For relics,make sure it gives more boost to physical damage if you chose strength, or magical damage if you chose intelligence. Don't use those that add to both.

If you do these, you should be able to fight battles better.

Do missions regularly to get a good source of equipment and potions. That will help as well.
