how do you get trait points and how do you genirat a second pet

To generate pets, you need essences. A regular essence gives you 2 trait points, an enhanced 4 points (like your starter and a mythical 6 traits points.
You can get essences :
-nurturing (regular)
-trade broker (usually regular and enhanced)
- missions (I only ever got regular personally)
-diamond shop (any)
You can't add traits, unless you use a genetic mutator. A genetic mutator gives you a random trait, visible or carried, where the pet has nothing (for lesser mutator-scales shop) or a chosen trait (for greater mutator- diamond shop)
If you want a pet with more vis, the best way is still to buy/breed it (that's my opinion at least =P).
