Carried genes are genes that a pet has that are not visible, but they can be passed on to offspring.
So, to get a better understanding of this, let's take a look at two of your pets:
Kawea has 4 traits, none of them are visible on her though so they are considered carries.
If her traits were visible, she would look like this:
Since traits can be passed down, a baby can receive a visible or carried trait from it's parents only. Grandparents, great grandparents, ect do not affect the baby directly. They only affect their own offspring.
If 1 parent has a visible trait and the other doesn't have anything in the same slot, the baby is guaranteed to have a carried trait.
If 1 parent has a carried trait and the other doesn't have anything in the same slot, the baby has a chance to receive the carried trait or nothing at all.
If 1 parent has a visible trait and the other has a carried in the same spot, the baby can either receive a visible or carried trait, but they will be guaranteed to get something in that spot.
If both parents have a visible trait, the baby is guaranteed a visible trait.
If you want to see if your pet has a carried trait, you have to get them tested. Some players have unlimited testers and are happy to test pets for free or for a small fee in this forum Breeding Forum
When you look on the profile of a pet that has been tested, carried traits are in italics and visible traits are straight. If you take a look at this pet's profile, you ca see that Uromastix is straight,, and she has it visible, but Runic Swirls is in italics, and she does not show runic swirls on her body.
The breeding grounds generator will only show you possibilities of outcomes for babies between two parents. If traits are carried, you won't be able to see them in the generator, only visible trait possibilities show up in the generator.
