I was wondering: when one is breeding and a pet has been genetically tested and shown to have a certain trait, when do you find out if it's visible or carried? Is it when they become an adolescent, or do you have to wait until adulthood?

Using this pet as an example, carried traits are in italics (in the example pet, Mystic Ribbon is carried and will not show once the pet reaches Adolescence) while visible traits are just normal text (in the example pet, Dalmatian is the visible trait).

If you don't/haven't tested a pet:
- carried traits will not show until the pet is tested;
- visible genes (G1 - G3) will show on the pet as soon as the pet hatches; and
- visible mutations (M1 - M3) will show on the pet as soon as the pet reaches adolescence. (Example)

Hope that helps.

I have a question relating on this topic if you don't mind.

Will carried traits ever become visible traits??

If a sylesti has a carried trait, it won't ever become a visible trait on that sylesti.

A sylesti that has a carried trait has a 50% chance of passing that trait onto an offspring, if that sylesti's mate also carries that trait (if carried a 50% chance of passing it on, if visible a 100% chance of passing it on) then the offspring may have the visible trait but only if both parents contribute the trait.

You have the chance to add a visible trait to a captured sylesti using a Genetic Mutator but those traits can be carried or visible and you won't know until you use the Mutator.

Let me know if you'd like me to clarify anything.

Thanks,
I'm still slightly confused but thanks. That pretty much answered my question.

Maybe an example might help?

I own this pet (say we name her "Fang"). Fang has the following traits carried: G1 Merle Markings, G3 Dalmatian and M1 Mystic Ribbon.

I also own this pet (say we name him "K-9"). K-9 has the following traits carried: G1 Merle Markings, G3 Dalmatian, M1 Mystic Ribbon and M3 Hellhound Skull.

The carried traits will never become visible on Fang or K-9.

If I breed Fang with K-9 then their offspring may start to show visible traits. See? This offspring has G1 Merle Markings, G3 Dalmatian and M1 Mystic Ribbon visible! (In the perfect scenario the offspring would have G1 Merle Markings, G3 Dalmatian and M1 Mystic Ribbon visible and M3 Hellhound Skull carried but I just wasn't quite that lucky).

This guide might help to explain the genetic concept behind the above and explains in detail how you can breed pets for certain outcomes.
