how do you get your pet to an adult, how long does it take?

Well, it's mostly waiting a few days. You can nurture it as a hatchling/egg to speed up the process a bit. It's patience, basically.

Eggs will take around 3 days to hatch. This can be sped up if you spread the egg around and have others nurture it.
Hatchlings will usually grow into adolescents at 7-8 days. This, too, can be reduced if others nurture the pet.
Adolescents will become adults and move into your stables at.....I think 26 days.
