THE COMING OF TORSTEN
Torsten is an large island. An island floating on the sea of time. There is no land to be seen anywhere near. The creators of this island gave the inhabitants a gift, as they gave other islands the gift of knowledge, speed and such like.
One hundred years ago, the spirits from another such island came to take the magic from the inhabitants, as they took other islands gifts. Their own gift was the gift of strength, but they were greedy, and used it wrongly. The island dwellers fought vainly, but the spirits had brought slaves from other conquered islands to aid them, and the defenders stood no chance. After years and years of war, the Creators of the islands turned away from the spirits in disgust, and banished them to a distant island. Most of the conquered slaves left, but some stayed and made the island their home. But they weren't safe yet.
The spirits were determined and patient, and the Creators knew it. To make sure they don't attempt it again, they gave the island a ward, fuelled by a burning fire in the heart to the island, hidden by dense forests , barren plains, and dangerous paths. As long as the Fire keeps burning, the spirits cannot come close. Every ten years, the Fire begins to die, and as decreed by the Creators, two people from each of the three remaining tribes travel to the Fire and re-light it.
However, the spirits were as crafty as they were strong, and had sent five lesser spirits that are ignored by the barrier to harry the nine. They take the form of people, beasts, plants, and even unmoving objects to carry out their one mission.
Destroy the shield.

Lesser Spirits(4):
Lesser spirits are the underlings of the Banished spirits. Too unimportant to catch the attention of the shield, they slipped through the barrier. Taking the form of a being or object, the disguise themselves as common things on the island, and tries to extinguish the flame. They usually have Sifter-Gift or the gift of possessing things as well as their base gift.
Tribes(6)
Three from each of the three tribe are chosen to light the flame, usually from ages 15-25, skilled in the arts of combat and survival, or at least have some characteristic that makes them the most promising young adult in their tribe. The three tribes have different gifts.
Torsten tribe:
The original owners of the island, they are connected to the land. They prefer to let nature take its course, and not intervene. Generally peaceful, they live of what the land gives to them, and gives back too. When protecting their lands, they are a formidable foe, calling up on the gift that ties them to the land to aid them, most are skilled in a bow, and their children are named after plants, Eg, Birch, Shrub, Thorn.

Faren tribe:
One of the first to be captured, the Faren are thinkers, blessed with the gift of magic expressed through metal. However smart they are and good at machines spelled to kill and tactics, they are weak and the fighters are usually self trained or left at an early age to train at other tribes. They are usually geniuses, and excellent at creating mechanical wonders, but forgetful and weak. Their children are given names of objects that relate to metal. Eg, Wire, Brazen, Nail

The Helian tribe are warriors, and have a fiery temper. They were only defeated by the Spirits because of treachery and numbers. They are hunters and predators, preferring action over words, stealth, and agility. However, they are brash, and do not think before they act, often getting in to deep trouble. They are blessed with the control of the most destructive of the elements, Fire. Their children are named after weapons or their gift , Eg, Blade, Shield, Arrow, Blaze.
