Gidday there!
This morning I used a net to capture a Level 53 pet, the script said :
[02:44:32 AM] You have encountered an Enemy! What do you wish to do?
[02:44:36 AM] You have begun a battle!
[02:45:30 AM] Your Party was victorious! You defeated 0 Enemy!
[02:45:30 AM] You have gained 0 Advancement Points!
The pet is nowhere to be found - as I am such a newbie - is there somewhere special I should look for the captured pet? It is not in my stable/hatchery

It most likely ran away. When the trap fails, there's a chance that the pet will run away from the battle. If it's the only enemy, it will then say you were victorious and that you won the battle.
Each time you use a trap, the Battle Log will tell you what happened - whether it failed or succeeded. And if it succeeded, it will link you your new pet's profile page.
