How exactly does it work, can I only choose the slot, or select an actual mutation/gene I want?

Greater mutators allow you to choose the exact genetic trait you want.
When you use it on a pet (under philter from the pet profile), it will ask you for the gene/mutation slot. once you choose that, they will ask you to choose the exact trait from that slot, then you confirm to use that on your pet. =)
