For this role-play, I will be bringing in my Draeyl, Miles.
It was dark. Too dark. Annoyingly dark, to at least one in particular. The previous night's rains had left the swamplands more pungent than usual, and the cloud cover blocked what little there was of the waning moon. It had made it near impossible to find something to eat, and while he would have loved to just scrape out a nice hollow in the mud and snooze the day away, a grumbling stomach urged a particular draeyl male to wait for the day.
He was large, perhaps slightly more than the average male of his kind but not by enough to raise alarm. Colors were dull, for the most part, his black scales fading in chunky splotches to a light grey down his legs. Pelt bore small scars, but honestly, what animal didn't carry a few scratches? He wasn't mutilated by any means, no, he wore the confident look of one who knew how to handle himself, but didn't exactly go looking for trouble. Perhaps the only thing outstanding about him, to any who cared enough to look him over, were the gleaming yellow eyes that glistened within their sockets. Unnaturally bright, they were like sparkling stars the moment the sun dared to peek over the horizon. The large beast winced a tad, usually he'd be asleep before being graced by the dawn, but hunger was a funny thing. Besides, plenty of creatures were just waking up... small ones he could snack on. Maybe he'd even find some eggs.
Slosh, slosh, slosh. Miles was far from quiet as he trudged, his legs like tree trunks pushing through the shallow water of the swamplands. Frogs bounced to safety from claws that sank into the mud, and he debated snapping at a buzzing lunemara before deciding the effort wasn't worth the reward. Besides, they left a foul aftertaste once swallowed, and he was not about to drink the water here. Nearly everything was stale thick and muddy. No way he was dipping his mouth into it unless he had to. Mud felt great beneath his toes... his teeth not so much.
By the time he had dragged his scaly hide to the edge of deeper waters, leaving his belly dripping but his strides wider, the sun had broken the horizon entirely. It was amazing how quickly the night gave way once that first trickle of sunlight found it's way through the trees... He didn't dislike the sunlight exactly, it just wasn't his norm. Now... where to find some grub? He really wasn't in the mood to work for it. Frogs were barely a bite... But Aurleon eggs... now those sounded fantastic. Still, Miles doubted he'd be lucky enough to find a nest in these parts. He didn't even bother glancing up into the trees as he went along, grunting out loud to himself as he went. "...Sick of scraping... just once, could something just fall in my lap?"

((I don't mind :D. But yeah, as much as it feeds my (healthy) ego, I agree it is probably better to change it something that makes more sense.))
Makia watched, fascinated, as two glowing yellow orbs bobbed along the grey swampland. It was the worst form of camouflage she had ever seen. Even more laughable, she was circling right above its head. Maybe if the dumb thing ever bothered to look up, it would see her, but it seemed intent on gluing itself to the ground.
Makia didn't belong in the swamp. She was a snow hunter, a silent shadow bounding over the white expanse or striking down from the blue-gray sky. She could still remember the thrill of the hunt as predator and prey clashed in a geyser of snow, the screech of victory ringing in the air, the taste of each crisp winter flake on her tongue...
No, no use thinking of such things.
The only thing she ever tasted in this gray, wet mud was a mouthful of mud.
Makia only needed one more meal to make it out of here. One full meal that wasn't a handful of stringy lizards or one those disgusting little bugs flitting around, too colorful for their own home. The creature below her looked full and plump. How much meat was there beneath those scraggly scales? By the way its feet sunk heavily into the ground with each step, the creature must have been hundreds -- no, thousands -- of pounds heavier than she was. Still, maybe if she could catch those yellow eyes by surprise, cripple it quickly and wait for it to bleed...
And so, with a deep breath, Makia dived.

Miles had never seen a Nytekrie before, and he certainly was not expecting to have something strike him from above. When bodies collided, the swamp seemed to shake from the force of the bellow that he let out. It was a noise so deep that it might has well have come from underground, a strange mix of surprise and aggression. It wasn't as though the thing that hit him was particularly big in comparison, or heavy... but it had come down hard and it was SHARP.
The force of the creature's body, had it hit him on dry land, might have done little more than to piss him off. But the muck was much different. Slick silt beneath the swampy soil made it difficult to balance, even with those big claws of his digging in, and Miles found himself being plunged into the shallow water. Instincts took over despite his sudden surprise, and he managed to swing his tail in the direction of the body that had lunged towards him. It was a swift and powerful motion that, while not very well aimed due to his current disagreement with gravity, would hopefully give him enough time to put a few feet between him and his surprise attacker.
"The hell?!" Wicked honeys glared this way and that until he found the source of the trouble. The hell was that! He wasn't going to bother to ask. He was pissed. Nostrils flared at the metallic scent of his own blood. This ****** had dug into him good. He snarled, pulling himself back to his four, ready to lurch if he had to. This was not what he meant by wanting something to fall in his lap.
"Well?!" he snarled out at the creature, baring his teeth which advertised a snapped left fang, though it didn't look like a recent change. He snorted, yellow eyes locked onto the feathered menace, this time ready for it if it decided he was still worth the trouble.

That didn't go as well as she thought it would.
Makia flailed backwards as a powerful tail swept towards her, its tip just shaving the down on her stomach. There was blood on her claws, but there was far from enough. Makia had hoped she would put out at least one eye in the dive; instead, she'd felt her talons sink into the hard, padded scales that covered its body. When the mud settled, she saw it glaring at her.
"Well?" it snarled.
Well, what?
Those scales were a lot thicker than they looked. Were the creature a Bulbori, or even a Zolnixi, it's head would be sinking into the muck while Makia feasted on what was left. Instead, the razor talons that were her pride and joy barely scratched it. Worse, now it looked angry.
Makia recognized a bad situation from a worse one, and this was one of those where she knew staying on the ground would be suicide. Curling her feet beneath her, she spread her wings and leaped into the air.
Or at least, she would have. Covered in mud and soaked to the skin, Makia flapped helplessly a foot or two out of the mud before plunking back down.
Behind her, the creature glowered at her and lowered itself.
Fine.
"Die!" she screamed, and charged as well as she could, struggling in the deep mire. She swung around, her wings spread and tail flared, spraying mud everywhere. Keeping her stomach to the ground, she punched forward with the hard edges of her wings, hoping at least to knock it off balance and give her enough time to get away.

To someone watching, this might have been almost comical - the two animals, so different in size and stature, flailing at one another in the muddy swamp. To Miles, however, this was far from comical. Quite the opposite, he was pissed. His neck and back, while he didn't feel the pain immediately, were throbbing with pain from the gashes this... feathered thing had caused.
"Die!"
Really now? It was out for death? It hit him suddenly... it was hunting him. Perhaps, had he been a witness to the event, he would have admired the creature for being so gung ho. The thing couldn't have weighed more than his head, how much of him had it planned on eating? Didn't matter, it seemed determined, and how embarrassing it would have been to get killed by something so much smaller than him. Still, he'd taken on things bigger than himself before, and he wasn't one to underestimate the power of hunger.
As the beast sprayed muck and water in his direction, he shifted his weight back, raising a muddied claw to guard his face, though the action caused him to take her wing strikes directly to a joint. He snarled loudly as pain shot up from his elbow, forcing him to dig his bag legs into the mud and almost fell forward into the water. Curse the feathered thing, it sure knew how to handle itself. Truth told, Miles had very little intention on trying to make a meal of it. He hated picking at things with feathers, and this thing was not worth the effort - he was on the defensive. Better to make himself too much of a hassle.
"Going to take more than that," he grunted, despite the fact that he was no longer putting pressure on his front right leg. "You done yet?" He snarled, blinking away blood that had now begun to trickle from the back of his head and into his face. Miles was not a happy camper, and was beginning to think he should have just tried to sleep on a hungry belly after all. "Or do you honestly plan on continuing this charade?" An angry hiss crept up in what was intended to be a calm voice - nothing better to piss off an attacker than to dismiss its attempts. Or at least act like you were doing so; Miles was in no way letting his guard down. This thing was fast...
Raising up onto his hind legs, the draeyl winced in pain as the gashes on his back stretched with the movement. Dumb bird, he couldn't even reach back there to tend them - they'd scab and itch for days, he was sure. Front claws dripped with slick clay and mud, and he favored his now injured foreleg, keeping it bent at the joint. Still, claws were claws. If this thing was intent on coming after him, he'd make sure to be plenty of trouble.

Nothing was working.
Makia swiped at its head with the full force of her weight -- about 70 pounds -- and found her wings painfully colliding with a defensive claw. She heard something crack; whether it was hers or the creature's she couldn't tell.
The force of the impact stunned her, and she stumbled back. For a horrifying moment, Makia thought the creature would lunge on her and rip open her stomach.
It didn't, and now she was terrified.
It was obvious before why the creature had come out of hiding, sifting along the ground. It was hungry, as she was. Its yellow eyes followed her like flames in the open daylight. They looked like they might enjoy Nytekrie.
"Do you honestly plan on continuing this charade?" it hissed.
Yeah? Well, I...
Damn it. Damn it!
Makia had surrendered to Luporas before, and Vulnyxes, especially the big, white hunters that stalked through mountain caves. She had fled from confrontations, hidden from predators and shivered in her nest as heavyset Morkkos pawed nonchalantly at her tree.
But now, she couldn't fly, she couldn't fight, and she was going to die. To an overgrown lizard.
"Alright, stop!" she screeched, sounding more desperate than her pride would have liked, "Stop!"
So saying, Makia took several steps backwards, splashing in the thick mud of the swamp. Her wing ached, her back was covered in mud and the cold of the wetness dripped down her spine. While her feathers provided ample protection against the dry snow, they did little to stop this muck from seeping in. More than anything now, she wished she could have a handful of small, stringy lizards.
She hated this part.
"Stop! I'm...I'm sorry."

Miles blinked as she screeched at him, only now realizing by the voice that it was a female. Or he thought it was. Made no difference to him. It was an "it" as far as he was concerned. Putrid looking thing, feathered and gross.
"Stop what?" He snarled at her. "Defending myself? You're the one thrashing and clawing you stupid feathered dog," he remained raised up, not about to settle back down just because it appeared the creature had stopped her attacks. That was a good way to get himself killed. Still, he made no effort to beat on her, either. Truth told, he hadn't seemed interested in doing much more than getting her to stop hitting him.
Miles was annoyed, now. His back hurt, his arm hurt... he still wasn't sure if she'd broken it or not. He could feel it swelling at the joint. He'd bet dinner that it was fractured. He should have fought her just for that. "The hell are you, bird? And what the hell are you doing, other than ruining my day?" The black and grey lizard grunted, bits of mud and water flying from his nose. On his hind legs, his height of six feet took him closer to nine, and the weight of his mass pushing down on his hind claws was causing him to sink into the ground more than he would have liked to admit. He needed to shift.
He moved slow, golden orbs locked on his assailant as a thick, sucking noise came up from beneath the swamp water, a few putrid bubbles popping as the beast stepped gently to the side, trying to find a patch of ground that wouldn't leave him stuck.

A thick sucking noise caught Makia's attention. Immediately, she seemed to forget that there had been a life-and-death battle occurring just seconds ago. With wide eyes, she watched as the overgrown lizard lifted its foot and popped free of the swamp. A few bubbles frothed on the surface of the mud and- wait.
Movement, underneath, as the creature moved away from the deeper water.
Fish?
Fish fish fish fish fish fish fish fish.
Perhaps one of Makia's greatest strengths was that she forgot and forgave very easily, primarily because she forgot easily. As the other creature shifted, Makia forgot that it was there, and following her hungry stomach, watched a small, but vigorous little organism wiggle out under the cover of the mud. She heard the big lizard saying something, but she didn't much care. Fish was much more important.
Makia loved fish. Once every two summers, she followed the Aurleons south and cavorted with the Kelpari in the shallow waters of the ocean, darting in to snatch the fish that their roiling hoofbeats churned out of the water.
A swamp fish can't be too different from a sea fish, right?
Seizing the opportunity, Makia lunged past the other creature and stuck her hand into the ground. After a few seconds of concentrated grabbing, she gave a cry of victory and pulled out her prize.
It was very strange, this fish. It was incredibly slimy and didn't have any fins, tail or gills. Its open mouth gaped and two tiny eyes swiveled at her from atop little stalks. It was the color of a bad meal regurgitated onto sand.
Makia popped the new fish into her mouth. She rolled it around with her tongue, testing the new taste with naive curiosity. Then she gagged and spat it onto the ground. It rolled pitifully about, and then tried to crawl away. Breathing heavily, Makia leaped at it and stomped it into the mud. She didn't stop until its open innards were being washed away by the waves she made.
"Hrrrrrrrk," said Makia, trying to keep her previous meals down, "Hccccckkkkkk."
She swiveled around for help. The only creature nearby was that overgrown lizard.
"Help m-" she began to say. Then, she regurgitated a day's worth of half-digested lizards and bug carcasses onto him.

She was the most repulsive thing he had ever seen. From the strange yet fierce thing she had proven herself to be a moment ago, the odd feathered beast was now... plunging it's head into the murk water? Miles couldn't move, he was so enthralled with what the beast was doing. What on earth was she doing?
"Um, that's a slu-" he started, watching her pluck her prize from the mud, but quickly silenced himself. If she wanted to eat it, it would at least keep it out of her mind that he was still on the menu. He grunted, stretching out his injured joint as he watched her swish the slimy thing about in her mouth, trying not to groan loudly at the pain that the action caused. Yup. Fractured. No doubt in his mind. He didn't pay too much attention as she went about stomping it to bits - however this creature decided to eat her filthy food, that was her business.
Miles actually blinked in surprise as she turned back to him, hearing her gack and sputter and... ask him for help. He remained poised as she neared him, frowning in disgust. What the hell did he want to help this damned bird for? If she gagged to death it would be all too satisfying after her previous stunt. He might have even been willing to suffer past the feathers to eat her, just so he could go back to sleep.
And, then, he lost his appetite.
The draeyl's stomach lurched as he failed to move fast enough, watching the vile nytekrie vomit up who-knows-what onto his hide. He had to fight hard not to yack up on her in return, though there was little in his stomach but Phlegm and bile at the current moment.
"Y-you... filthy.." he gagged, turning away from her. Suddenly the murky water didn't seem so unpleasant. He turned, lifting one hind leg after another in a sort of awkward shuffle away from the bird. Jowls parted angrily after he was sure he wasn't about to mimic her action, about to hurl an insult her way, when a sudden trembling of the ground caused him to halt. It felt like the whole ground had shaken... Birds took off from the trees above, and Miles lowered himself back down, left leg steadying him while he favored the injured one.
"Did you feel that...?" he muttered to the filthmonger, barely getting the words out of his mouth before it shook again, more violently this time. Small insects buzzed and frogs dove from the overgrowth and into the water. Something... was not right here.
