What are the possibilities with eggs you pick up while exploring? Can they have any gene/mutation combinations upon hatching or are they strictly regular pets?

the pets hatched from those eggs can have traits, or not.
I've personally gotten pets that have no traits at all, and pets that have up to two carries so far. So it really depends on your luck. You really won't know what species or what genetic trait(s) it'll have till you hatch it. The only thing you'll know is that it's not a fabled pet (since those eggs look different from the common pets)
Unless you found the eggs in nests in the festive zones, then you might find themed fabled pets from there. Otherwise, normal exploration only gives common pets that may or may not have genetic traits.

This may not help anyone, but I did find a nephini egg in the third zone shortly after it was released
