Are Mythical and Legendary pets only catchable with a red trap?

Yes.
If you find one though, don't hesitate to mention in the general chat ~ there are incredibly kind and awesome people who would give a master trap so you can catch it.
Once new content comes out, though, there will be a new trap that can catch up to legendary.

Oh, thanks for the info. All three pieces really, I've been trying to save for a legendary trap because I've never encountered one and I know if I stay like this I'll stumble on one. XD

Haha, yep, don't worry <3 the people here are extremely nice.
Plus the wheel might give you a couple traps!

Just wanted to point out, it's entirely possible to find mythical and legendary eggs as well. No traps needed with those~ but of course you don't really know what's inside the egg when you adopt it. :O You may just be surprised~
