Technically a gifted pet will cost the other person 1 gold. To do it,
click on the pet's profile,
manage pet
sale price: (put 1)
Sell to user id (This can be found on the user's profile.)
set prices
If you don't put the price for at least 1g, the pet will not be placed for sale.
If you don't enter the other person's user id, anyone can buy the pet.
