Since we have the new stables now... would it be possible to add a marker akin to for forum pings to show us we have new messages? I'd rather not have to go to a tab that still uses the old system and keep refreshing that for this express purpose.

I agree! I miss being able to see if I have PMs at a glance.

If you hover over the icon to the left of the ping counter icon (in the header), you'll see that it actually says 'private messages.' It's just never worked.
