Do you need a genetic test kit to see carried traits? And if so, is there a kit that doesn't go away after one use and how much does it cost?

Yes, there is one. It can only be purchased from the diamond shop for 1500 diamonds, or occasionally for 1000 diamonds when they're on sale. You can also have another player with a genetic test kit to test carried traits for you by sending them the pet for 1g and then purchasing it back~
