Hello hello! I'm Leek. Been in the virtual pet site circuit for nearly 20 years. I'd wager I've tried out most of the big ones and several of the lesser known ones too!
Love the pet and marking designs here!
Just made my account last night, so I'm exploring and getting my footing here. If you've got any tips or little hints for a new player, I'm all ears!
I see a lot of discussion on the forum about people's personal projects but haven't noticed any particular details about what people are breeding for or how they meet those goals, so I am curious about that! What projects are you working on and what are your methods for achieving them?

Hello and welcome to Sylestia !^^
Here's a guide to Sylestia up until before the Lost Grove. There's another guide for it made by the same person but you won't need that yet! :-)
As for projects, we like to create projects out of pets to make them full visible traits to make them look pretty and max stats (very high statistics, the minimum health at level 0 without profencies is 2000, mana is 200, strength, intelligence, dextirity and agility is all 100. There's also supers where they are veryyy high) to make them useful in battle. You can also do both for 1 pet. We breed traits, mutate for new traits, careful pairing of pairs, using prismatic philters to boost stats (i think prisma boost str,int,dex and agl by 20 idk mana and health), and more to achieve these goals. Most people use themed pets for projects, I have a project too of a themed. Hope you didn't get confused :)

Ohh, okay, understood. From what I'm reading (not from your reply, just in general), breeding pets together for the sole sake of creating cute babies without a project or longer term goal is a bit of a no-no here? I'm seeing the term "dishwater" pets (which is hilarious and I totally get it; a lot of petsites have overpopulation issues, especially when they don't have a rewarding or decent system to dump unwanted critters!).
Maxing out stats is definitely my kind of thing and making beautiful dream pets along the way sounds perfect.

No ofc not! Of course you are allowed to make cute babs without any reason, its just that some people doesn't like it because they cover data space. You are allowed to have any playstyle you want. :)

I hope you don't mind my long reply! ^^
I'm probably not the best player to be giving tips/tricks out to newbies since it's been so long since I've been one! I'm sure someone will chime in with some more useful information at some point soon, I'm mostly just here to yap about breeding- :>
But~ just a few points of vague guidance! Participating in the current fest will help you out a bunch and get you a head start on collecting items/pets! Grinding out the story-line until you're in the lost grove makes it easier to chat to other players and obtain useful pets/items!
Reguarding projects, most players that do projects, will have projects that fall into 3 main groups: 6-vis/full-vis projects, max projects and super projects!
- - - 6-vis/full-vis Projects - - -
Quite a lot of the 6-vis projects on the site will be 'themed' projects (here's where all the themes available on the site are listed), the goal being: breeding themed pets until they have 3 visible genes and 3 visible mutations (or in the case of restricted themes, however many traits they're supposed to have)! Players do this for a number of other reasons, but if you create the first 6-vis offspring you get your name in the codex (which is always fun)!
The idea is to get tagged pets with one to three traits to 6-vis pets via breeding! Green traits are carried, and are not shown on the pet, blue traits are visible and traits displayed in purple have a hidden trait underneath! ie.
This --------------------- to --------------------- this!
Players also create 6-vis projects that aren't themed using essences (the items featured below!) or pets that they've caught/acquired! Essences can be used from the generator to create pets, each tier of essences has its own amount of trait points that can be allocated when generating the pet. Same deal as the themed 6-vis projects, except the player has decided on the colours instead of them being pre-set.
- - - Max Projects - - -
'Maxing' usually comes after finishing a 6-vis project. Players use philters to improve the base stats of the next generation of pets as they hatch the eggs to reach the max stats which are 2000 200 100 100 100 100. Max-stats are better in battle than any old caught pet and are usually sold for a substantial amount of gold! (You also get your name in the codex if you make the first one!)

Here are some philters that are used:
- - - Super Projects - - -
Super projects come after maxing and utalise the stats that Lost Grove pets have to make even better pets for battling! The goal being making pets with the highest possible wild stats for even easier battling! These sorta pets sell for quite a lot of gold and are pretty useful when you reach the Temple! If you look at the two images above, the + 0 is in the 100 + 0 is where the wild stats would be if they had any! Pets can have up to 80~ wild stats.
I'm sure other players have some much better, structured ways of going about their projects, but I find starting with 3-10 pets and breeding them together, keeping the best offspring to breed together and then repeating until they eventually hit 6-vis is the best way to go about it!
I'm personally working on a whole stack of projects, but my favourite at the moment is probably these Wrapped Present luffs, cause they're just so cute and pastel! :D

Oh! Just as a little note as well, the conjecture you're seeing on 'dishwasher' pets at the moment in the thread that Krin has up about the new breeding grounds, comes from players breeding with 0 goal in mind. As in they're breeding 1000s of pets, daily sometimes, for them all to be auto released when they age up. This is obviously a little unideal for space reasons and is what Krin is trying to find a solution for!
You are a-okay to breed whatever you want, whenever you want! As a newbie I bred a whole stack of random pets, just for fun! Nobody is gonna try and stop you! :>
Here's one of 'em! I liked that he was purple and blue, so I've kept him all this time! :D
