how do u increase your party limit? i can currently only have one

Go to the plaza in the towns to expand your party. You have to complete the capture a Sylesti quest and open the reward satchel in your inventory to be able to expand to the second slot.

What about the third slot

That slot opens up later as the story progresses just like the second slot but in Umbra Forest (If I remember correctly)

Yes it is in Umbra Forest, but it's a very expensive change. I believe it will cost around 25,000 to expand your party to three pets. I would highly recommend doing missions to earn some money to buy that third slot. That and sell what you don't need.
