I'd recommend doing missions with your pets since missions are a stable income especially at the beginning.
Another option would be to nurture pets in the Nurture Grounds and collect scales - you can buy different things in the Scale Shop you could then sell via the Trade Broker.
You might want to follow the Storyline and unlock the things on your way since items that are dropped during battle - and that you don't need, for example - can also be sold for gold.
When it comes to what you could do with gold...
That depends on your playstyle and what you're looking for. You can buy more stable space, more pets, avatar items or even safe up enough gold to trade it for the premium currency of the site. :)
