Tamed pets are just any pets caught in the wild via trap, obtained as an eggling or hatchling from the wild, or obtained from the scale shop, Arena, or Puffadore Pet shop.
(The other pet options being Offspring (a pet descended from other pets, bred by a player), Exclusive (created via a festival activity, or otherwise obtained in a special way, such as a prize for an official forum game), or Essence (made via the generator.) (there's also Starters, which, well, self-explanatory))
Tamed pets are the only ones you can use a Mutator (Lesser, Greater, Lucky, or Lovely) on, and a pet must be a Tamed in order to have a Lost Grove Restricted trait Extracted from it with a Trait Extractor (restricted wild).
