I'm at the beginner level and a couple of times now, I've clicked "retreat," but it begins the battle anyway.

It's not a glitch, it's working as intended! Personally I find it annoying, but retreats 'fail' sometimes.

I believe it's something along the lines of your party's lowest quickness vs the enemy mob's highest quickness + some rng? something to that effect, I think? But yes, running isn't a guaranteed thing
