For a long, long time, people assumed mythical creatures simply didn't exist. They're just something people back in the B.C. days made up when they were bored. If there were singing fish women leading sailors to their deaths, and winged horses jumping out of ladies' decapitated heads, surely there'd be evidence of it?
That is exactly what the mythosies have been relying on. Sirens pretending to be mute, hiding their tails with wheelchairs. Sphinxes hiding their lion half with long clothes and deliberately avoiding people. Kelpies simply refusing to shift to horse form.
But now, the mythosies have been discovered. Not only that, they're being hunted down. It's well-known that humans fear what they don't know- and these beings aren't something humans are knowledgeable on.
Rules-
*To keep things interesting, there's only one character per species unless they're family (I'll include boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife as family). So, no two kelpies, no multiple sirens, etc.
*Please have your creature have the same or very similar powers/abilities to their myths! For example, a siren doesn't have to specifically hunt greek sailor men in a specific ocean, but he/she should still have vocal-based magic.
*No gods or demigods. Species of mythical creatures only.
Taken species-
Sphinx
Selkie
Chimera
Characters-
Name- Mavaria
Species- Sphinx
Gender- Female
Personality- Friendly but slightly childish. Fairly mysterious and secretive, until she... isn't. Sometimes she's open as a book, other times she's more shut-off than a multi-billion dollar safe. Split-personality isn't the right word, but her secretiveness is a bit volatile. She adores reading and literature, especially poetry.
Appearance-
Backstory- According to herself, she's been around ever since legends of her kind has existed. All the other sphinxes, at least the ones she knows, are long-dead. She's hence a bit lonely and will gladly make new friends, especially ones where she can relentlessly ask them riddles.
Powers- She can learn any language, if given a few hours. This applies to unspoken languages, like sign language, and even computer languages like binary. She can also come up with riddles basically instantly, and when offered a deal, should she agree to it she is unable to break it.
Other- N/A
Name- Grant Ruadh
Species- Selkie
Gender- Male (afab)
Personality- Grant is an outgoing and adventurous fellow, his curiosity always getting the best of him. Grant might be naive but he can't help to be inquisitive. He is quite intelligent for an airhead, however; he's just better with retaining interesting subjects than social awareness. Grant can also be a blabbermouth, whenever he finds anyone interested in him, he can talk with them for hours without realizing it.
He's incredibly patient with others, never snapping. It seems that Grant doesn't even have an angry bone in his body, he's just gentle like that. On the other hand, he can get a bit touchy about his skin. Every Selkie gets touchy about their skin, especially their women; but now that the belief in them has faltered significantly, they worry less and just make sure no one sees their seal skin.
Appearance-
Backstory- Grant was born in northern Scottland, raised like most other Selkies are, in the waters until they're old enough to master changing skins. After that, his mother was sure to keep him close at all times, knowing what an airhead he was.
Now that he's an adult, he took this new freedom to explore the world and get a feel for it. But he knows, he'll end up back home to
Powers/abilities- He can turn into a seal
Name: Josep Sage Lewis-Penn (Joey)
Species: Chimera
Gender/pronouns: Male, He/him, amab
Age: ~24
Personality: Not afraid to pull the occasional prank, he has quite the chipper personality in contrast to his rather bland appearance and is usually quick to make friends in new social situations. However, this has also led to people considering him 'childish' and immature, which isn't totally wrong. He has some growing-up to do.
Appearance: As a 'human' he looks quite plain, boring really, not unattractive but nothing spectacular either. 5'9" [claims to be 6'0", don't listen] with pale brunette hair reaching just at his shoulders, lightly tanned skin, and auburn eyes surrounded in freckles. His only real distinct feature being the absence of his left leg knee-down. Thanks to modern technology, however, he has a prosthetic limb, bendable and all, in pants you could probably never even tell he's disabled so long as you didn't look too closely.
Backstory: Despite mythology, he and his family have never been the... feasting on human organs type. Josep was raised in a town that also had some Chimera in it, though it's no surprise you wouldn't know them all, regardless of whether they were sure another family was 'mytho', they'd still kept secret, it could have been a town of just Chimera for all they'd known [it is definitely not]. His family bloodline has consistently had the ability to turn into more than one creature and/or combinations of, so it was really no surprise that he could as well, though for now it only seems like he is able to shift to different avian species and has recently learned how to do snakes as well. His family knows full well that non-human creatures are currently being hunted down, and are taking precautions, but they figure suddenly moving and "causing a ruckus" would only stir conversations, making people talk and try to 'investigate', so their lives haven't changed much outside of not leaving the house as much, only for school and/or work and... completely prohibiting any and all use of their abilities.
Powers/abilities: In mythology Chimera are typically depicted as hybrid creatures mixed with different parts of other animals, however, there are some stories outside of greek mythos that said that Chimera had the ability to shift between human and another creature, namely to blend in with humans when necessary to later devour them. Some Chimera even told to be able to turn into several different creatures or combinations of, rather than just one. He, unfortunately, cannot breathe fire, despite trying on many embarrassing occasions. He can however turn into avians, just generalized avians... some may have the occasional snake-for-tails to mess with people...
Other: His parents hyphened their last names when getting married, just clarifying for his last name. ^^" I would in no way try to credit my information for anything other than storytelling, as some info has been slightly warped for my specific character [such as; all stories depict Chimaera to be female, "she-goats", and my character is not female, etc]. He prefers his 'nickname' Joey over his actual name.
His grandparents were from the southern coast of turkey and moved to America with his father and uncles/aunts when they were children, but his mother is purely American and he was born & raised in America. |
