It's a bit frustrating when you click on a pet profile from either the stables, the advanced search, or the hatchery and then you backpage and suddenly you're back to the first page/tab of the stables, advanced search, or hatchery again and have lost your place.

The advanced search solves this really well by opening pet profiles in a new tab by default so that you never have to backpage back to the advanced search, you just have to close the new tab. I think it would be really great to make that the default for the hatchery since it currently has no solution (that I'm aware of) to this issue besides manually telling your computer to open the link in a new tab every time, which is irritating.

It could also be a good idea to implement this with the stables as well. Or, alternatively, the links that can be generated to take a player to a particular tab or a particular stable could be used by default as the address shown when you're on a specific tab, so that when you backpage from a pet's profile to the stable again, it takes you to the page where you last were. This already works, you just have to manually copy the stable link and paste it into the search bar first, which means it's really only worth the effort if you're going to be clicking on many pets from that same tab.

So both of these solutions basically come down to implementing something that already exists in a way that means the site automatically does some work for the user, rather than the user having to do it manually. I don't know how easy the stables link thing would be to implement in that way, but I imagine it would be pretty easy to have all pet profiles from the hatchery and potentially also the stables open in a new tab by default the way they do from the advanced search.

Also, if you choose to leave the stables as they are, could you at least make the dropdown list of stables reset to be on the first one when the user is automatically sent back to the first one? Currently, if you're looking at a stable that isn't your first one, and then you click on a pet profile, and then you backpage back to your stable, you are sent back to tab 1 of your first stable, but the dropdown menu still tells you you're on the stable you were on before. Which means that to get back to that stable, you have to first click on a random different one in the dropdown menu before you can then click back to the one you'd like to be on. (More of a bug than a suggestion, but it's related to the other suggestions here so I thought I'd stick it in the same post).

I hope I did a good enough job of explaining what I mean by everything here haha. I'm a bit sleep deprived at the moment so let me know if any of this isn't clear.

with adult pets, you just hit the 'view stables' button on their profile (below 'proficiencies', above 'release') and it takes you back to the stable tab that they're located in
(though it doesn't apply to the same button on pets located in the hatchery)

Oh thanks, that's great!

So I guess the part that still stands from my original post is that hatchery pets should open in new tabs by default, and to fix the bug with the dropdown menu if you backpage to a stable that isn't your first.

You can hold down the Ctrl key (non-Mac) to open links in a new tab. Not sure how I'd feel about it being the default personally, though it likely wouldn't matter much to me either way.

Edit: to clarify, Ctrl+click is what opens a new tab

Yeah, I'm aware. I have a mac, but it's still doable, just a different key. It's just irritating to have to remember to do it every time and if I forget one time then I completely lose my place in the hatchery, which sucks when I have 30-40 pages I'm trying to sort through in order. To me, it opening in a new tab would be a minor inconvenience compared to that, especially since so much already opens in new tabs on sylestia so it's not unexpected.

The best solution in my opinion, would be to have the site keep track of what page you were on (not using new urls each time, because you don't want to have to backpage 30-40 times to get back to whatever you were on before your hatchery), and then when you click on a pet and backpage back to the hatchery, it remembers which page you were on and puts you back on the right page. But depending on how the code is written, that could be much more challenging to implement and the admins have a lot on their plates right now so I thought I would propose the new tab thing since it should be a much quicker and easier thing to change and although it isn't the perfect answer, I think it would be a lot better than what we currently have.

I believe the way the hatchery is currently coded won't really be compatible with being able to return to one page - individual hatchery pages don't have their own links the way stables do

Yeah, you wouldn't want to do it with links anyway - that's what I meant with the bit about URLs. But there are other ways for a site to keep track of what page you were on. As I said, though, I obviously don't know what the site's code looks like, so I don't know how challenging that would be to implement with the existing code. Hence why the opening in new tabs thing is probably a much easier solution.

I have to say that, to be honest, I am not really a fan of this idea, and this is from someone who does tend to open everything in a new tab.

I know that there are times when I *don't* want to open something in a new tab, in say the advance search, but it still does, and it can be a bit annoying, especially when I can open things in a new tab all on my own (and often automatically do the necessary actions to do that on the AS anyway)

For instance, I hate that clicking on my name on any of the 'old' pages automatically opens the profile in a new tab. Most often I don't want that to happen, yet it still does, which can be annoying to me, as it now means I have to track down that tab (and I often have several open at any given time).

I prefer this being on the player side rather than a site thing, honestly.

Fair enough, and as I said, the better fix would be to have things like stables and especially hatchery remember the page you left off on when you backpage to them. I just suggested the new tab thing because depending on how the site is coded, remembering what page you were on might be a lot harder to implement. But if we're not thinking about difficulty of implementation, I think the page memory thing would be a much better solution than the new tab thing.
