They see it's occupied before they even enter. It's some sort of snake thing, and it clearly isn't friendly.

Meda skirts around the edge of the oasis, careful not to get the attention of the snake thing. She takes her bag and scoops up some of the soil with it, then a couple seeds.

They can't risk disturbing the creature. They don't know how much damage it can do, or how many dogs it can kill, and that's a really bad thing to not know in this scenario.
