I try give them a cheerful goodbye smile but can't muster it, instead it comes off as a sort of grimace, without a word I turn around and head back home.

I don't say anything, just pick her up and pet her for a bit, letting my nerves calm down, this was fine. it's better this way.

I chuckle lightly "mm yeah, yeah you're right I got you girl." I'll pet her, suddenly an idea pops in my mind "wait here girl" I wanna go find a nice sturdy stick gonna try and carve out a flute, it's something I used to play whenever I or my sister felt down, I haven't played one in years

She watched you go and look for a stick and then start carving it. You can't fully get the inside hollowed out, you would need a thin knife or something.
