I gulp and immediately jump up and announce to Jada "I'm going for a swim" then run and jump (figuratively) into the water, swimming a little way in. I had left on an awkward note and I wasn't happy to repeat it.

I grumble and sulkily sink underwater, I'll swim around under there, let's see how long I can hold my breath underwater, anything to keep myself in the water and out of sight

I wince slightly and pretend it doesn't bother me, this is what I had expected after all, it shouldn't surprise me, so why was there a hurt feeling in my gut? The water was absolutely no help so I head back to shore, and after a moments pause head over to Jada, putting a false confidant smile on my face, it wasn't the best, and felt false to me but it was still convincing enough I hoped.
