Because theyre always smelling a lot of very strong smells. If Caleb can smell a scent, its ten times stronger to a strix smelling the same thing. Theyve got an amazing sense of smell. So not smelling something strong is a pretty rare occurrence for them.

Strix have buff nose. Always smells lots of stuff. Not smelling lots of stuff is weird.
Virv looks around too.
