Revenge makes for a pretty good backstory honestly.

My bf wrote a prince character (Yolvet) that was a child of one of mine actually I'll use as an example here because he's more along those lines. (And his backstory was a major plot point)

So Yolv was introed to our group at the start as an antagonist alongside his minor big bad, moth king dad, Xenon. Yolv, from his birth, essentially had been groomed, trained, and engineered into a superweapon (thanks to his magic) to be used against Xenon's enemies who were currently at war with him, his family line, and his nation for generations over a land dispute on their planet.

In an act that got the two the attention of the galactic authorities to arrest them, Yolv was ordered by his dad to literally use his powers for genocide to drown an entire capital into the ocean.
After the two got arrested, Xenon had more or less suckered a lighter sentence out of the Galactic Federation to sweep his blatant war crime under the rug.

This came back to bite him of course. A lot of plot stuff with the major big bad that ended up slowly teaching Yolv the truth of his father's actions and gaslighting against him and against his people and with the help of the other characters on crew, he finally started to accept it and viewed Xenon as a spineless coward. He took his anger with him to murder his own father with no remorse when Xenon tried to slip off to the big bad that had been manipulating him into serving him. and he still has the head of the big bad who manipulated Xenon hung on his wardroom wall.. along with his dad's arm and other trophies of all of his other enemies.. uh

Even now, Yolv's a pretty hard guy (despite being the crew's legit captain now) to stick around because of him being generally avoidant of people and distrusting. He's prone to anger and doesn't like having his authority questioned at all even if he doubts himself a lot. He could probably count the people he could trust on one hand and he'd pretty much do anything to defend them and his own honor.
He doesn't open up to too many people but when he does, he really is laughably naive because there's a lot he just doesn't understand because he was never taught these things. All he knows how to do is kill and he takes pride in that as a warrior.
It's been the task of the rest of the crew to show him he's not just a weapon.

You really want to feel destroyed as a writer, TVTropes exists for that because everything in media can be boiled down to combined sets of literary tropes.

I made the Aeldrian species (my warrior moth/bug alien race) long before the game Hollow Knight dropped (like 5 years before).
My bf went out and pointed out the similarity of a lot of the lore in the game after playing with our own universe and it just

Doesn't help they used to look a lot more like the Hollow Knight moths before they got revamped to how they are now.
I don't mind seeing parallels between works but it's definitely an oof sometimes
