Thea was mostly unaware of the reactions of those around her. The thing she was most aware of was the yelp that came out of Scorpius because she had grabbed his hand. As she climbed the platform to sit on the stool, all she could think about was that she must have made some kind of huge mistake. There was no room in her head to think about the murmuring that was taking place regarding her, the the fact that the group of adults that had been on the stage before were looking concerned, one even looked like he might vomit, but that was all still less important to her than Scorpius.

Professor Longbottom guided her over to the stool and gently placed the hat on Thea's head. Whatever she had been expecting the sorting to be like, she hadn't been expecting this. There was suddenly a voice inside of her head. At least, she hoped it was only in her head because it started out extremely personal...

'Ah, a Dursley, how interesting...how about we take a look to see how you tick, eh?' it began, and Thea glanced about nervously, praying no one could hear, but then she though that she hadn't heard the hat speak while it sorted the other kids until it called out their Houses.

'You've got some intellect, but maybe not on the level of Ravenclaw...bravery as well, but Gryffindor doesn't seem to fit...' It was hard to follow what the hat was saying, and she wasn't sure that it sounded good. She still wasn't sure how she felt about the sorting, about being possibly divided from the people she had just met.

In that moment her panicked thoughts turned to Scorpius. Thea sought out his face in the crowd while the hat continued to ponder its decision. She found him and was relieved to see him smiling. She smiled a little at him in return, and then she thought about what would happen if they ended up in different Houses. The thought of losing his friendship just because of some old hat made a dull fury build within her. She stared straight at Scorpius, her face probably a confusing mix of expressions. Desperately she began to think to herself, I want to be in his House...

'Fascinating,' the hat said suddenly, coming out of its silent thinking, 'That sort of loyalty seems to suggest Hufflepuff but then...ah, yes, I see now...' Thea felt as though a decision had been made, and she wasn't disappointed as the hat had it's final say.

'SLYTHERIN!'

-----

On the outside, it looked as though Albus was unaffected by the revelation that was Thea's identity. Inside, however, his mind as a whirlwind of activity. He glanced up at his parents, who were definitely looking troubled, as did his aunt and uncle. Rose seemed stunned, meanwhile he was just left wondering what all of it meant. He understood his parent's reactions, particularly his father, but it seemed like they were all making assumptions about this girl, much like people made assumptions about him as the son of the famous Harry Potter.

"Stop staring," he said to Rose, nudging her in the ribs, "What does it matter if shes a Dursley?"

It didn't matter, at least not in his opinion. He knew about his father's time with the Dursleys, of course he did, and they had treated him terribly. But from what he remembered his father saying, Harry's cousin Dudley had, in the end, proven to not be so bad. So why didn't it stand to reason that Thea would be the same? Yes, it was surprising that she was here, that she was magic, but when it came to muggleborns anything was possible. He'd learned that from his Aunt Hermione. Though, when the sorting hat was done with her...

"Oh...," he muttered lamely as the hat announced Thea's chosen House as being Slytherin.

There was no sweeter news to Scorpius' eleven year-old ears than that of Thea, his only friend thus far and likely to be his only friend at all, knowing his own dorky nerd of a self, was placed in Slytherin. The House that Scorpius' family had been in for so many years, so many generations.Previous to this moment, Scorpius had had absolutely no doubt in his mind that he would be placed in Slytherin as well. After all, that's what his parents were in, and his grandparents, and so on. Since he was a Malfoy, it simply followed, by principle alone, that he would be in Slytherin.

However, this moment came. The moment that Thea was in Slytherin, and in that moment alone, the anxiety crossed Scorpius' heart that, well, what if he wasn't? What if, he was placed in Ravenclaw, since he loved to learn? The notion struck him deeply, and it took all of his self-control not to tremble.

Thea went on to the Slytherin table, and the next few sortings were a blur for the Malfoy. And then his name was called.

"Malfoy, Scorpius!"

A hushed murmur spread over the crowds, and the adults up on the platform seemed to be doing a better job of hiding their shock. In fact, the Granger-Weasley woman was smiling. As Scorpius made his way up to the stool, he felt like he was floating rather than walking.

When the hat was placed on his head, he couldn't help a small widening of his eyes. It felt as if... Well, as if the hat knew him better than he knew himself, and the feeling was absolutely unsettling. The hat grumbled in his head for a few moments before actually speaking. 'A Malfoy, haunted by the mistakes of his father... How queer. But, Slytherin is not a bad house, you know,' the creaky voice said.

I don't want to be put there for my heritage alone, he pleaded.

'Not just your heritage, my boy! To be a Slytherin is to be proud. To be ambitious. And these traits are present in you, even if you don't see them. So... Without further ado...'

"SLYTHERIN!" the hat shouted, and Scorpius wasted no time in scrambling down from the stool and making his way over to the Slytherin table, sitting next to Thea and flashing her a small smile.

There was little time for Thea to adjust to the idea that she had been sorted. She was ushered in the direction Professor Longbottom indicated, a long table to her right where a bunch of older students were clapping as she approached. She sat down, giving nervous smiles to those around her, and turned her eyes back to the platform. She was still feeling incredibly anxious.

Her experience with the Sorting Hat had been one of the most unusual things that had ever happened in her life, and she was beginning to wonder about the consequences. It had seemed like the Hat had considered her plea to be put in the same House as Scorpius, but how could it possibly have known which House that would be? Scorpius was still waiting to be sorted, and what would happen if he wasn't also in Slytherin. Thea seemed to feel deep down that she was in the right place, but she tapped her foot nervously and waited...

'SLYTHERIN!' came the shout of the hat after it had sat on Scorpius's head.

Relief flooded Thea's system, and she clapped loudly as her friend came over to sit next to her. She gave him what was possibly the brightest smile she had ever made in her life (and truth be told her face kind of hurt). She scooted over a bit to let him sit next to her, and then turned her attention back to the Sorting. Rose and Albus were yet to come. Rose had mentioned hoping to be in Gryffindor. Thea vaguely wondered how that might effect the possibility of them being friends...

-----

So the Dursley girl was on Slyterin. Well, Albus didn't let that automatically decide his opinion of her. His Aunt Hermione, who was one of his favorite relatives, spoke often about the unfairness of prejudices, which she had had much experience with being a muggleborn. He didn't care one way or another about Thea at the moment, but he wasn't going to let this sway him in any direction. He would observe and make his own decision.

"Potter, Albus!" called Uncle Nev, er, Professor Longbottom (that was going to take Albus some time), and he realized that the sorting had continued while he was deep in thought, and it was already his turn.

The "whispering" conversation in the Hall had, of course, grown louder at the sound of the name Potter. Of course, he had good reason to know that it wasn't nearly as excited as when his older brother James had come to school as a first year. At any rate, Albus simply ignored it all, gave Rose's arm a brief squeeze, before ascending the platform and taking his seat on the stool.

'Ah, a Potter is it?' came the wise voice of the Sorting Hat, 'Hm, yes, and you're an odd one aren't you? Or so you think...I can see right through you, boy. You came up here thinking this would be difficult for me, but there is plenty of things you choose to hide, trying to believe you're so different from your family, so if you don't mind I'm not going to dillydally on you...

'GRYFFINDOR!'

Rather shocked and after sheepishly glancing at the hat, Albus hurried off the platform and joined the Gryffindor table.

Honestly, this Sorting was unremarkable, by Rose's standards. Simply and purely unremarkable. Granted, she had been informed of the sorting hat when she was younger, and the shininess of the wonder had worn off of her by now. She never liked to live much in the moment; the future was what mattered. In fact, although she knew she couldn't right now, her hands still itched for her copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard that had been handed down to her from her mother. She had read it more times than she could count, but THAT novelty never wore off.

"Weasley, Rose!"

All of a sudden, she was being called up. And it felt like all the air had left her body. She couldn't have imagined she'd be this nervous being sorted, but she was the second to last one due to her forsaken last name. There were eyes on her, scrutinizing her, and a distant murmuring, though in her befuddled state - ears ringing, vision splotching with dark patches - she was unable to recognize that it was not as loud as it had been for Albus.

Her feet felt like they weren't even touching the ground. She merely floated up to the platform, and when she systematically sat on the stool and the hat was placed on her head, she felt so dizzy that she hardly even noticed it until a wise old voice crooned in her mind.

'Ah, a Weasley and a Granger. How distinctly I do remember your parents! Both unusual, wonderful characters, if I do say so myself. And I do.' It laughed. 'Now, I see absolutely no question as to where to put you, my dear. Yes, yes, you've a mind about you, that's for sure! But I think, in reality, your most defining quality most certainly places you in...'

The relief Albus felt with his sorting being over was short lived as he made his way to the Gryffindor table. His older brother, James, was making a large raucous over Albus joining them, which Albus knew he was only doing because he knew how much it bothered his little brother. He chose to simply ignore James and as a result he looked rather uncaring as he sat down with the other Gryffindors. He could hear the older students starting to make comments and shoot him confused and offended looks. He paid them no heed.

Instead, Albus shifted his focus to his cousin, Rose. He knew how she felt about crowds, about being the center of attention, and he just hoped the hat didn't linger on her. When her name was called, it seemed his hopes had been well placed. It wasn't long before the Sorting Hat declared her in Gryffindor and Albus showed a rare bout of enthusiasm as he clapped along with the rest while she made her way over to them.

"Good job," he whispered to her as she sat down, and as the applause began to die down, he leaned over to her, "Did the hat seem a bit...odd to you?"

------

Thea watched the rest of the sorting with Scorpius sitting next to her, and she realized it had lost its weirdness for her, his proximity. Instead of focusing on him beside her, she was instead watching the rest of the sorting with her "thinking" frown on her face. What she was still having a hard time with was the principles behind the sorting. She had tried clapping when Albus had been sorted, but she received dark looks from the other students sitting on the Slytherin table and so she'd stopped.

Rose looked so nervous as she walked up to the hat, and Thea felt a pang of concern for her...train acquaintance? It was hard for her to use the word "friend" even though that resonated inside her and seemed to feel right. Thankfully, Rose's sorting didn't last very long, but as Thea watched her walk over to the Gryffindor table to join her cousin, she felt a sadness. It seemed that she had been right in wondering about the divisions the sorting caused, and she wondered now whether she would even be allowed to speak to Rose and Albus from now on.

"So what now?" she asked Scorpius in a low voice as the sorting came to a close. Seconds later, food just appeared in front of her and she squeaked slightly.

Scorpius was glad to sit beside his new friend - the thought of having a friend still excited him - again, and the smile on her face, however awkward it might have looked on her normally scowling face, brought an even bigger grin to his own face, and he felt, if only for a moment, that he might actually belong in this magnificent castle.

But then, of course, both Albus Potter and Rose Weasley were sorted into Gryffindor. It's not that it made much difference to him - he had been expecting it, of course - but Thea didn't seem all that happy anymore when Rose was inevitable sorted into the 'House of Heroes' as his father used to bitterly call it when he got in a mood about the whole past.

He frowned slightly, smile forgotten, at Thea's question. Well, now was probably a better time than any to break the news to her. "Now... We will eat, and then go to our common rooms. I hope you didn't become too fond of her. Gryffindors don't like Slytherins, and vice versa. Actually, now that I think of it, the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs aren't too fond of us either. And on top of that, Rose and her cousin, Albus, both come from some very famous Gryffindor families. Those four lovely celebrities up there, namely," he gestured up at the table.

Unable to meet her gaze, he looked away, focusing his eyes on his plate. "Don't expect for either of them to give us a second glance now."

-

As soon as the hat had announced its verdict, and the Gryffindor table erupted with cheers, Rose felt air whoosh into her lungs, having to make a conscious effort not to choke on the sudden intake of oxygen after having been within the grips of anxiety. Professor Longbottom took the hat off of her head and she wasted absolutely no time in scurrying down from the platform and rejoining Albus at the Gryffindor table. Even her father's shout of, "That's my girl!" couldn't shatter the elation she felt.

She was grinning from ear to ear as she took a seat beside her cousin again. She was especially, delightedly surprised when he cheered for her, as she knew he wasn't typically much of an enthusiastic or openly celebratory type.

But of course, his question calmed her down again. Almost. A bubble of laughter actually rose up within her at the absolute absurdity of it, but she swallowed it, her face starting to hurt from how big she had been smiling.

So instead, she rolled her eyes at her dull screw of a cousin. "Well, personally, Albus, I haven't met many talking hats. I don't know about you, but I don't really have any criteria to judge the Sorting Hat upon," she retorted, shaking her head at his odd nature.

Things settled down in the Great Hall shortly after Rose was sorted. The food appeared magically on the table and everyone began to dig in. Albus began to absentmindedly fill his plate without even really looking at what he was grabbing. He risked a glance at the raised platform that the teachers ate on and wished he hadn't. He saw his parents chatting animatedly with Professor Longbottom and some of the other professors. His dad glanced in his direction and smiled.

"Seemed odd to me," he murmured to Rose, turning his flushed face away from the platform and down to the food on his plate. He nibbled half-heartedly, his appetite was never all that great. He watched the other students eating with vigor and made a face. He tended to make faces at most other people's behavior.

"Why do you think they're here?" he said to Rose, "Why wouldn't they have said something to us?"

It annoyed him, but not necessarily because he didn't like his parents and aunt and uncle here. Albus did not like to be surprised. It made him feel out of control and unstable. He didn't like feeling that way. He squirmed uncomfortable in his seat as he continued picking at his food. He was sure James thought the surprise of his parents being here was cool, or maybe he had even known. That wouldn't have surprised Albus. Inevitably, James got much of the attention from his family.

-----

There was a lot going on...almost too much for Thea. After the giddiness died down slightly from beaming at Scorpius and being pleased to have her friend with her, she was starting to feel extremely overwhelmed. The level of chatter amongst the students had risen to a loud hum across the Great Hall, students at her own table were grabbing food and have many different conversations all around her. She started to hunch over in her seat, slouching her shoulders as she began eating.

Thea listened carefully to what Scorpius was saying, though she stared at her plate the whole time, trying to take everything in. She was not necessarily a shy person, but this was all still so very new to her. She was surrounded by people, but she was also surrounded by floating candles, and a ceiling that looked like the sky outside. Not to mention that talking hat! It was all very strange...

"So...no one likes us because a hat said we're in Slyther?" she asked, frowning at Scorpius, "That just seems...beyond stupid." It was a simple statement, and not intellectually put, but it rang true for Thea. This whole being-sorted-into-Houses thing seemed like the most absurd thing in the world to her, and especially because she was being told that people she had met and connected with on the train ride here now were off limits because of a talking hat was just...ridiculous.
