"I knew it," Derek hissed at the news of it not being an accident. He noticed pain flash in Harlin's eyes and he scowled deeply once again. He brushed some hair from his face when Harlin began speaking again. His eyebrows shot straight up when he was told whodunit. He hadn't been second in command at the time, but he remembered that event like it was yesterday. It was very hard to just forget. He chuckled nervously at the little joke, but it held no humor. "Personal matters?" Derek asked without much thought. Then he quickly waved to dismiss the question. "Of course I will take over some of your duties. Can't have you dying of stress. What do you want me to do?"

"I-I just need someone to manage the squad. Just to plan their trainings and help them prepare for missions... We all know you're more intimidating than I am, so I don't have any doubts that everyone will behave." He laughed a bit at that. Harlin has only ever once been truly ticked off at the squad, and that wasn't a good day. For anyone. "Besides, I also don't want funny business form the rest of the guys, considering we are at a girl's school." He said with a bit of a serious face. It was no secret Harlin hated harassment of girls of any kind, so there was that.
There was also something Harlin was hesitant to say, or admit, but he knew he should say it.
"I'm probably going to be stuck in a room all day, watching PHOENIX's movements as well as trying to find out their base. I'll be out on missions that are longer than my typical 6-12 hours. I'll be gone probably three days at most at one point. Hopefully not that long, but you know how things can get out of hand quickly."
Harlin sighed a bit, and lowered his eyes momentarily. "I also need someone here, if anything goes wrong." He said in a quiet tone.
Harlin shook his head a bit, and went back to smiling like an idiot. "Who am I kidding? I've always, and always will come back from a mission." He put a hand on the back of his neck again, which was a nervous tic of his. He glanced at his wrist, checking the time. He hadn't realized it was already around dinner time.
"You've been working pretty hard, wanna go see what the girls have here for food? I'm sure it's better than the slop we get back at base." He smiled, but his eyes silently said I just need a break with someone.

The response he got from his leader concerned the second in command even more. He wasn't sue if Harlin should be going on missions on his own if personal stuff was going on. He took a deep breath and chuckled at the mention of keeping the guys in check since they were around girls. "Don't worry. I am perfect for the job, since, you know.... I have no interest in women." He started walking out of the training grounds. "I am sure the dining hall is around here somewhere. We'll find it, together. Just like we will find a solution to this. I can hold down the fort, but a squad needs their leader. Not their irritable second in command."

Raph sighed as he kept his notebook close to his side, pencil on his ear once more. He was starving from all his thinking and planning and testing. He hoped the food here was as good as at Blackthorn.

Harlin laughed a bit. "That is very true, very much the reason why I trust you with that job."
He started walking alongside him, his hands in his pockets as he looked up at Derek. He smiled softly as he looked back at the ground.
"I'm sure we will." He said in a soft tone, and then laughed a bit, nudging his shoulder with his own. "You're not so bad. You're a picnic compared to most Second Commands, or even Leaders in general. Some of those guys are scary, and cranky all the time."
