I'm going to see the movie... but I've been told that the book isn't my style and that I'd find it a very dry read (this coming from my mother so I believe her), so I've been reluctant to pick them LotR books in favor of my other ones.

I don't especially like the books. I've only read one of the LotR books and I was horribly bored halfway through. It uses a lot of old english and a few chapters are dedicated to describing a scene. I'd really rather whatch the movies. xD They're a bit more interesting.

You'll love the movie! I can't wait to see the next one though. UGH! I hate cliffhangers!

I just hope I get to actually see the dragon... And more than just it's tail and snout... I was so upset when the movie ended and that was all I saw of Smaug. :( I love dragons and love seeing different renditions of them.

I read the hobbit book, and though i enjoyed it, I do think it is overrated. I have read children books that where much better written. So far I think the movie does a better job then the book (only having seen the first one so far) because it has become more then just a children story and the dwarfs are easyer to memorise.

So yeah, the book is fun, I would say try reading it, but do not expect anything more then a simple chilldren's tale where things are rushed. It's a good, not great, book. The movies will be a lot more apealing to a lot of people because it had become more then just a simple tale. (including what Gandalf is doing and just felshing it and the characters, including Thoring and even Bilbo, out more. To be honest if the movie had been 100% faithfull to the book, the movie would have been boring.

I did enjoy the LOTR books though. True it was sometimes difficult to read but that is because of the time it was written in. And it was for adults and teens of that time. I keep that in mind while reading now and then it really is a master piece. (just look at all the things Tolkien created to make that story real, He made his own biology, languages, history, geography etc for his world. He didn't create a book, he created a whole world. That is amazing.

But I do not recommend it to people who like easy or quick reads. That story takes time and patience. I loved it though. But again, I do believe the movies apeal to more people and are less complicating then the books and timewise make more sense, a I love the movies too. I rewatch them, extended edition, every year :)

Overall I don't mind it when the movie has things different then the book, as long as it doesn't hurt the characters.

This triangle thing with Legolas Tauriel and Kili seems damaging to all 3 characters though...so I'll just ignore that part and pretend it's part fanfic of a fangirl which somehow slipped into the movie. Not canon.

The good thing of having a movie and a book, who both in a way can be considerd canon, is that you can pick what you like best from both versions and make that your own canon. :3

I have now seen the movie and have to say I did enjoy it, I didn't even mind the triangle thing in mirkwood itself. Legolas did seem to act more like an older brother to be honest... And the Kili and Tauriel thing was funny.

But I did not enjoy 1 thing in the whole movie, which is the Tauriel healing Kili and Kili being all lovey dovey for several reasons.

1: It felt like a copy if the arwen Frodo scene, only less well timed. Arwen was glowing from the start (in frodo's eyes) Tauriel suddenly started glowing.. it felt weird. Also She smiled at him instead of fully focusing on the woond.

2: The Kili talking about Tauriel felt like a copy of Gimli talking about Galadriel. It also felt alward and out of place...more so because at the same time Tauriel left Legolas to fight a whole group of Orcs all by himself. For a girl that is supposed to kick******I expected her to heal Kili, and go after Leggy to start helping him. Instead she just stands there....it felt very much NOT kick******and more again like how girls are typically portrayed. It hurt her character.

But despite that scene, I liked the movie. I am a bit annoyed they do not explain why Thranduil is as he is though. Now they make Thorin seem like the good guy and Thranduil like a bad one even though Thranduil has much more reason to act like he does than Thorin has reason for his behavior. So I do hope extended edition or next movie will show the people who do not read any of the books or extra information, what has happend to thranduil and what kind of horrors he has seen which will explain why he is so protective of his people.

The barrel ride was a lot of fun! And Smaug...oh god Smaug was just awesome. He looked MUCH better then he did in the trailer. He really became my fave movie character of that film. The cliffhanger was awefull though.

Overall I give this movie an 8. It could have been a 10 like the lotr movies (who where perfect to me :3) if only not for that Glowing smling standing around healing scene and making Thranduil seem like a bad guy compared to Thorin..who is actually more selfish and other less nice things then he is. Book makes that very clear..

Bard was great. I am already rooting for him. And the little during family moment in which Fili stays behind with Kili and Thorin wanting Fili to go was great. It showed the loyaltie of the brothers, and it showed (at last) that Thorin loved his nephew Fili as well. (in the former movie he seemed a bit Kili oriented)

Anyway The movies was great fun, in fact I'm going again with a friend. For people who love middle earth I'd say please go. The few things bad about it do not in any way outweight the good of this film.

But that is just an opinion not a fact. ^^

For people still reading here, what was your favorite moment in this movie and what your least favorite and why?

I loved the entire movie. It was amazing. Story wise I don't have one single thing I like more than the rest. Mechanic wise though I just LOVE how perfectly they portrayed Smaug as a dragon, particularly how he reacts to gold. It was just wonderful how they portrayed him when faced with the giant gold statue. He was completely hypnotized! And then when it melted? Oh! He was amazingly angry. (I'm a huge dragon person so small things like this can easily irritate me if they're not done properly. I get that there's a lot of differences in dragon myths, but I would have been peeved if Smaug acted differently than he did after how they painted him in both movies. They painted him as an A-typical dragon minus the fetish for kidnapping princesses.)
