It was a lot to take in, particularly for Thea. She was a smart girl, her previous teachers were constantly defending her abilities to her mother. The problem was, she was not good at appearing intelligent. It took her longer than most kids to come up with an answer, because she spent more time thinking and processing information from every angle before speaking or making a decision. From the outside, however, she knew she appeared slow and stupid.
"A singing hat..." she said, digesting the concept, "So the hat tells us which House we belong in? How?"
Thea knew she had a lot to get used to. However, there was something comfortable about being in the train compartment with Scorpio and Rose, despite the fact there was clearly some tension between the two of her companions. They must have known each other before now. Her physical nearness to Scorpio had stopped bothering her and she even offered him a smile in thanks for the information.
"So what are the differences between the House?" she asked, even though she still wasn't sure she liked the idea of some old hat dividing kids up. It seemed like an easy way to create conflict between students who would might have eventually ended up friends.
For a brief moment, Thea felt a twinge of anxiety and glanced quickly at Scorpio. Would he still talk to her if they ended up in different Houses? She was surprised to discover that she very much hoped so. Even Rose's presence was becoming familiar and comfortable to her, which seemed odd given their short acquaintance, but it was something Thea saw little reason to question. Could they all suddenly become divided? The thought made her frown deeply.

Scorpius' piercing green eyes were caught by something flashing by outside and he stared past Thea for a moment. He had to struggle to keep a frown from his mouth; he despised being as easily scared as he was. He would give anything to be as confident as his father had been. But in truth, social situations freaked him out when he wasn't rambling about some interesting piece of information he had uncovered. And he hated it so, but there was nothing he could do.
Perhaps, he mused, that was part of the reason why he didn't want Thea to know his family. If she were to know, she would be scared off for sure, and he couldn't risk the only friend-like relationship he'd managed to make thus far. Ignorance is bliss, after all.
He had most feared for his ability - or lack thereof - to make friends, and had been concerned that he would spend seven years at Hogwarts completely alone and friendless. And now that he had met Thea, that might not happen.
"I suppose," he pulled himself out of his thoughts to answer her, "the hat sees our true colors."
-
The ginger girl fiddled with her hands in her lap as she couldn't help but overhear another of Thea's thoughts. Although the girl seemed somewhat slow, she thought quite and awful lot. There was some strange charm about her standoffish demeanor. Rose couldn't help but ponder her for a moment as she gave Scorpius his turn to speak.
At Scorpius' answer, though, she didn't hide the rolling of her eyes. "Whoever would have known that Scorpius Malfoy was a romantic at heart?" she muttered, forgetting herself for a moment. Then she shook her head.
"Really, the only thing that separates the Houses are what they value," she told Thea, but then she felt a twist in her chest as she recalled the quiet girls' earlier thoughts. "Though, she continued with a shrug, "the Houses don't really bother friendships much. My parents were Gryffindor, as I said, but one of their closest friends was in Ravenclaw," she explained, smiling slightly as she remembered the Ravenclaw in question. "They're still friends now. She visits every now and then and brings exotic gifts," she giggled.

There was much Thea still didn't understand. She thought about the start of summer, before she had gotten her Hogwarts letter, and how unhappy she had been. Even when she'd gotten her letter and her father had explained things to her (well, as best he could anyway), she still hadn't felt at ease or excited. It had just been something different, something that might be marginally better than her current situation. Instead, she was beginning to believe that this might be a lot better than her life before.
"So we put the hat on and it tells us where we belong," she said, trying to prove she'd been listening, though she still didn't understand the why of the sorting. It didn't seem like Rose or Scorpius really questioned it, so she decided to keep quiet about it for now.
At any rate, Rose made an attempt to explain that the sorting typically had no negative effects on friendships amongst the students, but Thea knew that there was probably more Rose wasn't saying. For example, they had both mentioned there being four houses, but in Rose's example only two were mentioned. Either way, Thea was going to stick to her resolve to not worry about it for the time being. For now, she simply wanted to enjoy the growing sense of belonging that was beginning to build inside of her.
"So how much longer do you think it will be till we get there?" she asked, turning her green eyes towards Scorpius.
-----
It was a beautiful, sunny day. Albus was in a wide open field. The grass was green, the flowers were blooming and the air was filled with their mild floral scent. There was just enough of a breeze to keep things the perfect temperature, but that wasn't even the best part. The best part was...he was all alone. No siblings, no cousins, no nagging adults, no one but himself. It was perfect...
"Hey!" came a sudden shout and Albus felt himself get prodded hard in the ribs. He yelped slightly and woke up with a start, his head colliding with something hard.
"Ow...," he commented, rubbing his head and blinking his eyes.
"What on earth are you doing up there?" said the mysterious voice which had woken him up.
It was then that Albus realized he had been napping in a storage compartment on the Hogwarts train and there was an older student, looked like a fourth year, poking at him. He lazily stretched a bit and then slid gracefully down to the floor. He gave the other student a passing glance, and without saying anything to them strode out of the compartment. Judging by the light outside, it seemed they were close to Hogwarts.

(Timeskip!)
Although he had heard a great many stories and tales of Hogwarts from his parents, nothing could have prepared Socrpius for the true beauty of the magnificent castle. Initially, it stole his breath from him. He stared, stunned, for a moment, and could only imagine what Thea, who knew very little of the castle, must be thinking. It had towers that seemed to stretch as high as the sky, and a glorious lake beside it that sparkled in the moonlight. The lights streaming from inside seemed like fireflies floating in the darkness from a distance. It was absolutely gorgeous.
When they had departed from the train, Rose had quickly disappeared, muttering something, and he was glad for it. There was a massive column of tension between the two of them, though they did their best to ignore it in the compartment, if only for Thea's sake. After being brought to the castle in castles which seemed to be pulled by nothing at all. During the trip to the castle, he had said very little to Thea, instead in awe of the magnitude of Hogwarts.
Upon arriving, they were greeted by a young-looking man who introduced himself as Neville Longbottom, Herbology professor and deputy headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Then, he had given a brief description of the sorting and guided the group of eager first years up the steps and into the Great Hall.
The Great Hall itself was almost as awesome as the image of Hogwarts from afar. The ceiling showed a sparkling night sky, with a few clouds swirling cheerfully here and there. Candles floated above everyone, plates catching the wax that dripped from them. And, at the very front of the room, a older, strict-looking woman stood, smiling out at all of them.
-
When the train came to a stop, Rose wasted absolutely no time in getting out of that compartment as fast as she could. It was highly uncomfortable, sitting there with the son of the old childhood enemy of her parents, aunt, and uncle. So, upon the ending of the train ride, Rose muttered something about having to find her cowardly imbecile of a cousin, and set off to do just that.
"You weak spit, leaving me all alone with him!" she growled at Albus upon discovering him, half-asleep it seemed, and linking her arm with his. She led him to one of the carriages, all while scolding him more, much as one would expect her mother to do to one of the insolent boys she hand out with as a child.
When they reached Hogwarts, however, she quieted. At seeing Neville - ah, Professor Longbottom - a close friend of her parents', she couldn't help but beam at him. Though, she knew that as he was now her professor, she couldn't refer to him as Uncle Neville now, but simply Professor Longbottom. The professional within the gentle man prevented him from smiling back at her, but she did happen to notice him spare her a small glance, with a smile in his eyes, if not on his lips.
Although Hogwarts wasn't quite as astounding to her - after all, her parents had brought her there when she was very little, and a few times after that when they needed to discuss something with McGonagall and couldn't find a suitable babysitter in time. On days like this, she, her brother, and her cousins would spend time with Neville, in his classroom.

Things had quieted down in the train compartment after Thea asked her "are we there yet?" question. Rose mentioned putting on their school robes and while Thea and Scorpius were busy pulling things out of their luggage the ginger haired girl made a break for it, muttering something about her cousin. That must have been the other person that was with Rose for the briefest second when she had first opened the door.
There was little conversation, really no conversation, as Thea and Scorpius exited the train. She found herself relieved that he wasn't trying to run away from her now that they were out in the open. He didn't say anything, but he stayed with her as they climbed into a carriage (which was pulling itself!) and journeyed to the castle. His silence didn't bother Thea much because there was plenty to look at. She couldn't believe half of the things she was seeing, and it got even more overwhelming as the neared the castle.
The only time Thea stopped craning her neck to try and take in every single thing she was seeing, was when Professor Longbottom corralled all of them outside the Great Hall and gave his introduction speech (Thea wondered vaguely what Herbology was). Upon mention of the sorting, Thea's nerves seemed to return in full force. She glanced anxiously at Scorpius, who seemed full absorbed in what the professor was saying, and once again wondered what would happen to their budding friendship if they were sorted into different houses.
As soon as Professor Longbottom was done speaking, he organized the lot of them and then led them into the Great Hall. For a moment, the grandeur of the room was enough to drive any anxiety out of Thea's mind. It was short lived, however, as they approached the front of the room where a stool sat on up a platform, and on the stool was an old looking hat. Thea's heart started to pound slightly and she nervously cast her eyes around the group of students. She saw a flash of reddish orange and caught sight of Rose.
Thea tugged on Scoripus's sleeve and tried tugged him in Rose's direction. The adults seemed to be waiting for something, and Thea thought maybe it would be easier to handle the situation if they all stood in a group. She started in the other young witch's direction, but didn't get very far before she accidentally bumped into somebody rather hard, and no wonder because the person was a good head shorter than she was.
-----
Albus had wandered the train for a short amount of time before Rose found him, already clothed in her school robes and hissing at him for leaving her alone with the Malfoy boy. She had practically put his on for him before dragging him out of the train. All of this passed without Albus paying it much attention, and the ride to castle was mostly uneventful. Hogwarts was nothing new to Albus, who had seen it all before, and he spent most of the journey yawning and looking bored.
Once inside the castle, Albus followed along with the rest of the first years, stood there while Uncle Neville, sorry, Professor Longbottom, gave them the spiel about being welcomed to Hogwarts and about the sorting ceremony. He trudged along beside Rose into the Great Hall and stood with the others in front of the stool that hat sat upon. He waited with the rest of them for the ceremony to begin and there was some light conversation and shuffling about. He was prepared to pay all of it no heed as usual until another student collided forcefully into his side.
"Hey, watch it," he said, glaring up at her, for it was a girl student, and for a moment the two of them locked eyes.
-----
Thea opened her mouth to apologize, and that was when the other boy looked up at her, a glare in his eyes. His eyes...she stared openly at him for what seemed like forever, disbelief and confusion blooming on her face. His eyes were green...slightly almond shaped...it seemed impossible to Thea but there was no denying it...his eyes were exactly like hers.
"Who are you?" she asked in a low voice, almost unaware she had asked it out loud.

Well, Thea didn't know about the history of Scorpius' family with Rose's. That much was obvious. Nor should she, Scorpius figured. The beauty of a muggleborn was that she had nothing to judge off of. Thea was innocent to the reign of the Dark Lord. She was innocent to everything that had happened before her acceptance letter into Hogwarts. It was pure, unadulterated naivete. And Scorpius loved the second chance.
When she pulled him back over towards Rose and, he saw, her cowardly cousin, Scorpius knew she wasn't intentionally trying to freak either of them out. But, he couldn't help his quickening heartbeat. Of course, Rose was able to keep herself composed around him, but everyone knew how irritable Harry Potter was rumored to be when he was young. One can only imagine how his son would be.
But then Thea and Albus met eyes, and they stopped. Scorpius glanced between them, and he wondered why he hadn't noticed it before. Shaking his head slowly, he felt an uncharacteristic rage build up within him.
No... No! He refused to believe it. He refused to accept it. There was no way, by Merlin's beard, that the one friend that Scorpius Malfoy the Nerd was a Potter. He swallowed hard and felt his hands clench into fists at his side. Not a Potter...
-
The state Rose had found Albus in had been horrendous, but she felt as if she had cleaned him up nicely enough and berated him quite enough by the time they entered the Great Hall. Although she had every intention to fade into the crowd and ignore her ancestry and family and the impact they had on the history of the wizarding world, she knew that that would be quite arduous.
But then there was Thea, approaching again, and bumping into Albus. Rose was expecting to just ignore it and move on in wait for the ceremony, but then Albus stopped. He met Thea's eyes, and she murmured a question.
Rose's attention was caught, briefly, and she happened to overhear their thoughts. Oh. Oh. Well. Before she had time to process what the akin eyes could mean, she squinted in ponderment and glanced up at where the sorting hat was. The old, dusty hat was sitting on its stool and arguing...with four very familiar magic-users.
Her hazel eyes shot open wide and she began tugging on Albus' arm. "Oh, Albus!" she hissed. "Yes, your eyes are very similar, and you're so romantic! But, Albus, look!" she gestured wildly up at the platform. When he didn't look away from Thea, she tugged even harder. "Albus, you thick boor! Our parents are here!"

Stunned was probably the best way to describe Albus's state of mind at the moment. He frowned at Thea, oblivious to Rose and the Malfoy boy entirely. He could tell right away, of course, that Thea's eyes and his were nearly identical. I mean, many people had green eyes, but as a Potter who had grown up hearing stories about how everyone had recognized his father Harry "not by his scar but by his eyes", which he had inherited from his mother Lily, well you just tended to recognize that these were no ordinary green eyes.
"Shut up, Rose," Albus said irritably, shaking her hand off of his sleeve, his attention still mostly on Thea, "The better question is who are you?"
If he sounded abrasive he didn't care. Albus didn't much care how others thought of the way he behaved, nor did he particularly care that his parents were both here. He was not a particularly bad kid, it just happened that he viewed the world somewhat indifferently. This issue with Thea however was...intriguing. She was clearly just as confused as he was, and the Malfoy boy look wildly uncomfortable. Well, that was certainly interesting as well...
-----
Thea was trying to get her brain to stop spinning long enough to process all the thought whizzing around inside right now. Her eyes had always been the one thing she took pride in. She was stocky and rather round like her father, with fine blonde hair to match, while he older brother was willowy and handsome, with thick and wavy chocolate brown hair like their mother. However, Thea's eyes were unlike anyone else's in the family, even her grandparents (though she remembered her Nana Petunia making a sneering comment about them once), and they had always made Thea feel more confident, like she wasn't like everyone else.
"Are you alright?" she said, her attention shifting suddenly to Scorpius since the boy with her eyes seemed to stunned to speak still. She had felt Scorpius's shift in mood almost as certainly as one feels a shift on the room temperature. He seemed...upset, and it concerned her in a way she had never really experienced. She supposed it was a result of their newly formed friendship. She meant to speak to him more about what had upset him but as she was about to the other boy finally spoke up.
"Well...," she said, rather uncomfortable, sparing Rose a glance as she started tugging on the boy (Albus, Thea thought, thats what Rose called him), "I'm Thea-"
Before she could finish speaking the man who had greeted them earlier, Professor Longbottom, clapped his hands smartly together and announced that the Sorting Ceremony was ready to commence. There was some sudden shuffling as everyone rushed to reform their lines, and Thea and Scorpius were cut off again from Rose and Albus.

It took a few moments for Scorpius' anxiety to calm down long enough to let him speak. But before he could respond to Thea's concern, he overheard Rose's comment, and his mind was thrown back into overdrive. "Of course!" he exclaimed suddenly. "Of course your parents are here! Like some great force wishes only to ruin me!" he moaned dramatically and even excessively buried his face in his hands, for good measure.
Not only was Thea, his only friend thus far, seemingly related to his father's childhood enemies, but those childhood enemies were also here in the flesh, standing atop that platform. And since, of course, Scorpius was so greatly cursed with his father's astoundingly good looks, there was no doubt in his eleven year-old mind that they would recognize him at once and hex him to bits.
His despair was interrupted at once by Professor Longbottom's booming voice as the Deputy Headmaster announced the special guests that had come to visit this evening. He stated that before the sorting ceremony was to begin, he wished to give these guests a chance to speak.
"And without further ado," the Professor grinned, "I would like to introduce Hermione Granger-Weasley, Brightest Witch of her Time, her significant other, Ronald Weasley, our King," a couple of the staff members laughed at this, "Ginny Potter, the most bad*ss girl to ever attend, and Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived."
-
Although in the way of personality, one would agree that Rose Weasley modeled her father more, there were undoubtedly parts of her mother's character shining within her besides her obvious intellect. After all, she was a full half of her mother, and so, when Albus shrugged off her concern, it only made her even more annoyed, and ever more obnoxious.
She was eternally grateful when her and Albus were distanced from Thea and the Malfoy once again. She huffed and flicked his ear. "You may not care who your father is, but I sure do! I was hoping we could kind of, you know, make the other students forget our heritage, so we could get judged for who /we/ are instead of who our parents are, but it's apparent to me that you do not share the same sentiments!" she ranted in his ear. She was about to continue, in fact, when Uncle Nev- ah. Professor Longbottom. Well, whatever his name, when he began speaking.
Rose felt all the color drain from her face as her parents were introduced in such a grandeur way. Leave it to Professor Longbottom to grace those who needed not to be graced, for the mere mentions of their names in the wizarding world nowadays brought up excitement.
She avoided looking up at all when Uncle Harry came to the podium and announced how proud he was that his youngest son as well as the eldest child of his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, would be attending Hogwarts this year. He then went on a big Harry-like spiel about how he was really no one special, and everyone had a chance to be a hero, and even if they weren't defeating a Dark Lord, simply helping someone in need was heroism.
Of course, Rose had heard this same speech a dozen times before, and she couldn't even imagine how Albus must feel. After Harry was done speaking, Ron stepped up to the podium. He scanned the crowd. "Oh! There's my little Rosie!" he exclaimed to the whole of the Great Hall, pointing down at his daughter. "She's gonna blow the rest of you first years out of the water!" he exclaimed.
"Ronald!" came Hermione's terse hiss, and he immediately stepped away. Well, thought Rose bitterly. So much for subtlety.

Rose was by far Albus's favorite cousin, though he supposed that was maybe not saying much. Many of his younger cousins were at least a couple years older or younger than him, and the ones that were nearer his own age were incredibly obnoxious. Rose could be as irritating as the rest of them sometimes, but she was the one with the least faults in his eyes and so he spent most of his time with her.
Albus loved his family, that much was not in question, at least not by him, he was sure others probably interpreted the way he behaved as him being uncaring. He did care, in fact he knew that he cared very deeply about a lot of things, it was just that he expressed himself much differently than other people. He was, in fact, relieved to see his parents there, though he understood Rose's feelings on the subject. He was nervous about Hogwarts in ways that he had only shared with his mother, and seeing them both their for the Sorting Ceremony was comforting to him.
"It'll be fine," he whispered to his cousin after her father made his ridiculous comment, linking his arm through hers which was their special way of supporting each other.
He stood there with Rose, waiting as Sorting Ceremony began. Albus watched as other young students began walking up to the hat to be sorted. There was boisterous applause whenever a particular House gained another member, and Albus could feel his nerves starting to bubble just under the surface. He glanced around and caught sight of that girl who had bumped into him earlier. She was standing next to the Malfoy boy. Albus couldn't help but continue to wonder about the mystery that surrounded her. His curiosity was almost painful in wanting to know who she was.
Then, the girl's name was called out...
-----
There were a lot of things happening around her, and Thea was having a hard time thinking. First there was the boy with her eyes, then there was Scorpius having some kind of panic attack, then there were four wizards up on the platform that everyone seemed to be very excited to see, though Thea of course had no idea who any of them were. She frowned deeply and glanced over at Scorpius, trying hard to make sense of everything and figured out what to do.
On top of it all, Thea happened to glance over at Rose as one of the adults up there made a...parentally embarrassing remark towards her. She assumed it was Rose's father. She felt a bit of empathy towards Rose. Not that her mother had ever made such a kind comment such as that, but being embarrassed in public by a parent was something Thea was very familiar with. Part of her wished that she was over there so she could try and comfort Rose, not that she'd really have the first clue how to go about that, but Albus seemed to have things under control. Which reminded Thea about Scorpius.
"You look really upset," she whispered to her friend, only vaguely aware of the Sorting Ceremony had already begun, her brows furrowed as she tried to understand and figure out what to do.
Then she remembered noticing Albus link his arm through Rose's. Thea had never been very close to others, but Scorpius seemed to be her first friend ever, and she didn't want him thinking that he was alone or that she didn't care about his distress. Her heart pounding, her hands going a little clammy, she reached down and just very lightly grabbed his hand. It was more like gently pinching half of his hand between her thumb and first two fingers, but it was certainly more physical contact than she was used. There was no time for her to say anything or really see what Scorpius's reaction might be, however, because all of a sudden her name was being called out by Professor Longbottom.
"Dursley, Dorothea!" he shouted. Thea stood frozen for a moment, risking a final glance at Scorpius before taking a step forward, her hand slipping away from his.

His mind was in overdrive. Scorpius couldn't believe his misfortune. The absolute misfortune. As his heart pounded in his chest and time seemed to slow (whoever said he wasn't dramatic?), he was abruptly forced back into reality by the feeling of three fingers squeezing his hand. In spite of himself, he let out a small yelp, which was hopefully lost in the hustle and bustle as students were sorted, and then Thea's name was called out. Her full name.
His mind cleared. His breath hiccuped. Dursley? He had heard that name before... Where had he heard that before? It snapped. In a history book about the Golden Trio. Of course! He was so stupid to automatically assume she was a Potter. She was a Dursley. An enemy of the Potters. He couldn't help a grin that spread across a face in pure relief.
-
Rose was dumbstruck. There was no other word for it. Of course, she had heard her Uncle Harry's stories of how the Dursleys treated him. Granted, it wasn't often that Harry was moved to talk about the people by whom he was raised, but when Rose was young, she would ask after them, and a great once in a while, he'd open up. The young ginger child knew not the extent to which they treated him, but she did know that he had to work a lot and was kept in a cupboard under the stairs.
But Thea hadn't seemed bad. A little quiet, a little standoffish, a little intimidating, but not bad. Quickly, Rose looked to where her family sat, up with the staff. Uncle Harry's eyes had gone wide, and his face had turned a deathly pale. Aunt Ginny clutched his hand tightly and whispered something or other to him. Both Mom and Dad were exchanging a worried glance before looking to Harry nervously, and then down at Thea as she approached the hat.
