I've heard lots of good stuff about LotR online, RIFT is actually going free-to-play in june or july i think? my friend is trying to convince me to start playing when that happens, heh.
i'm not the most experienced as far as MMOs go, or gaming in general, others here are much more educated about it as i can see, but i got into TERA recently and i really like it. It's free, pretty easy to learn and play(i suck at gaming, so that's a great thing for me), and while i agree with the slow leveling, it's really fun if you can grab a friend or two. Plus the environment is really nice and atmospheric, and the character creation isn't too bad(sylestia is a bit more option worthy with individual features, i will say though).
again though, i haven't played very many MMOs, so my opinions are really limited and it's entirely up to you. but i think maybe taking a look at gameplay videos and such on YouTube might be helpful! |
I remember fiesta, I use to play flyff to. In flyff I played as a chara named aria, cant' remember what server for these games tho. I didn't get into them bc I prefer mmos where u can do whatever u plz, such as learning any skill u like, battling when u like, farming, etc. I like the players have control idea. altho I don't like too much control otherwise u might get something similar to a start out mine craft server, where ppl start laying down some rules and preventions, bc of taking items and such. Fiesta was nice. I wish the chara customization was more free. another enjoyable game if u prefer battles in Vindictus. Its battle system is sooooo much fun. I dislike the extreme control feel tho. U had lil chara customization, ex: male duel wield, elf ranger, and beast warrior, or female knight, mage. U had a bit of control on some facial features tho. I also once tried another game with a huge amount of chara customization, can't remember its name tho. Kinda of similar to guild wars which is free to play but u gotta pay for the disk. Both the games had a class system tho. Hey if u know what kinda of style u like this might help us with ideas for mmos. |
Someone else mentioned Mabinogi. I'm an avid player of that, and love it to death! I very, very rarely pay for anything on it, and I have no trouble keeping up to par with people who do buy stuff. They do have great stuff to buy, if you want to, like different (cute) pets, some of which are rideable and can help in battle, and things like clothing dyes(but those can be bought off other players ingame with game money, and are sometimes given out during their many events.) it is a very customization game as well, both in character creation and gameplay. There are hundreds of different outfits available, as well as hundreds of different weapons, shoes, gloves, etc. (they even have different hats you can get, and almost all outfits can be bought ingame, without having to spend rl money. Again, you can, and some items are harder to find ingame because they are bought with real money and oftentimes the in demand ones sell for a lot or are rare) But they also have a dyeing/color system implemented. So hundreds of outfits become thousands, if you count the different colors you can dye each outfit(all colros fo the rainbow.) Now, some colors are harder to get, but they ar epossible. Your character is completely your own. you get to choose it's age (it will age), gender, race (elf, human, or giant. Each has it's own benefits, like increased movement speed or a different range of aprticular skills in certain categories), hair color and style, eye color and style, face shape, skin color, etc.
Mabinogi also has a nice freelance system, where you don't have to choose a particular "path". As in, you don't have to choose whether you want to be, say, and archer, mage, or warrior. anyone can be anything, at anytime. There are loads of different skills to work on, and you can train, say, a range and a melee attack at the exact same time. (You even have two different weapons windows. A primary weapon and secondary. You can switch between them mid-battle, and whenever else you feel like it.) You do have what is called a "talent", like the other person said, but all that does is give you extra experience in a certain field (like melee, range, or magic) that helps you build that skillset faster. It doesn't force you to use only that skillset, so you are free to use magic even thouh you are an archery talent. They also ahve what are called life skills, which are like clothesmaking, music, cooking, fishing, and a few hp regeneration skills.
They also ahve a dungeone system, and a alrge world with a constantly growing storyline. They have 2 large continents, one with about 7 or so large towns and the other with 3 large regions with a large town each. They have a third, small continent, but it only holds one town. There are quite a few different dungeons around, and a lot of monsters around even the towns, so you don't have to go into the dungeons to gain levels. They have a main storyline quest system as well as many mini quests which can give you more advanced skills, exp, and ingame money. They are constantly having events, which often give out items that cost real money outside of the events (they don't give out pets int eh events, though.) The player base is also pretty friendly. They used to have a lot of bots that spammed the chat, but those have been mostly dealt with.
Last thign I'm goignt o say about it is soemthing that makes it extremely unique from other mmos I've played: character aging. Your character grows a year each week. You can start off as young as 10. Now, here is the fun part; if you get too old for your liking, you can rebirth. Rebirthing allows you to go back down in age. You can choose any age between 10 and 17 ech time you rebirth. When you rebirth, your current level goes down to 1, HOWEVER your skills, stats, and cumualtive elvel stays the same. (so, say you reach level 50, and rebirth. You reach level 10. Now, you are actually level 60.) It is also easier to gain levels after rebirthing. It's really helpful ing etting out of those little stuck rutts where levelign up takes too long, so you get stuck on one level for forever. the only limitation is that there are a few conditions you must meet before rebirthing: Either you reach age 20, or you buy (real money) a character rebirth card. The card cannot be bought ingame, and must be paid for out of your pocket. However, age 20 is not hard to reach, sicne you grow each week, so really the only reason to buy a rebirth card is to change your appearance.
*coughcough* I'll stop now XD I'm kinda sorta obsessed with Mabinogi *bushes* I've been playing it for about 2 years now... |
