GM UPDATE

hello everyone! it's been a while, but i'll be resuming Distorted Nights. the current waitlist includes Aphelion and Whiterosealliance in that order. i'm keeping my player count small while I'm getting back into the swing of things, but there'll still be another slot opening soon.

for now, i just wanted to announce a small shift in mechanics. it's been about six months since my last post here, and i've decided to make a few changes because of it.

first off, a distinction has been created for receiving distortions vs identities. if you wish to receive a distortion from an encounter, your character must show the emotional/mental impact of their traumatic experience. conversely, staying steady and overcoming the experience will reward characters with an identity.

aside from that, mentions of extra mechanics related to distortions & identities have been removed from the game mechanics section. instead, various methods of strengthening your character will be introduced in the first few missions your character takes on so that players have a better introduction to this magic system's components.

thanks for your interest everyone! i'll be dropping a few story posts soon.

(i also like scary people hehe. hopefully you don't mind me assuming a few things about junjie in this post. namely their competency because they seem very competent. :> extra information has been sent to your DMs as a follow up to this post.)

For all the calluses and scars littering her hands, Igor takes the handkerchief with a surprising nimbleness. Maybe it's a benefit of using them for a living. Even when she moves without purposeful attentiveness, her subconscious care for the fabric translates. The tips of her fingers trace against the embroidery with a delicate touch, and she looks down to examine the way the colors of the thread shift when she tilts the handkerchief to catch the light.

By the time she turns back, the time she's spent distracted is already enough to be considered impolite. A bit reckless, too, given the sword hanging at your side. Her eyes fix on that next, drawn by the decorations hanging from the hilt, before finally shifting back to meet your gaze.

"You're quite thoughtful," Igor says. The smile on her face says that she's pleased by the fact, but the way her pupils seem to shake ever so slightly from her too-focused attention says that it might be a bit dangerous to please her. Still, you're probably good at danger, given how you're more competent than your colleagues in every way that matters to the City Contingency Service. They just don't know that -- not yet, at least.

However, Igor seems content to make that assumption now that she's been bought off. "If you haven't, I'd suggest turning off your communications with HQ, at least for a little while. I've got a job for you, but it's a little confidential, shall I say?"

Igor places a finger against her lips in the universal sign for silence, waiting a moment to let her request sink in before she continues, pitching her next words on the edge of human hearing. "I've been tracking a shapeshifting demon, and my work places it right inside of your local CCS branch. As my assistant, I need you to take a look for me."

Her hand drops to the communicator at her wrist, and after a flick directed in your direction, a request to share a file appears on your device. "The demon will flee if it sees me coming, but that'll be different for you. I narrowed the list down to three suspects, and I can lend you an Identity that lets you verify who they are, but you'll have to figure out how to close in on them yourself."

Golden eyes peer up at you from beneath pale lashes. "You in?"

spatial anomaly // THE WHALEFALL MARKET

There are very few dispatches from the City Contingency Services that are worth your attention. The demonic presence has penetrated deep within the Citys foundation, and with that comes a daily influx of minor cases. Suppressing them is like trying to exterminate an infestation of maggots and worms by killing them one by one -- an effort made in vain when the source of the decay remains untreated. Unfortunately, with the CCSs lack of both intel and resources, stomping out each issue as it comes it the best they can do.

In this case, the Whalefall Market isnt the carcass thats drawing these scavengers in, but its much closer than whatever cold cases the CCS has been chasing. Its one of the rare documented instances of a stable anomaly thats spawned multiple demons, rather than the tragedies that the occult are typically birthed from. Going off of the evidence, containing a variety of victim statements, invoices, and security footage, that you intercepted from the CCSs call, it seems like a case where someone or something is purposefully infecting the victims.

The Entity has told you that this case is destined to be the exposition of the Story that you've been shadowing.

Somehow, this is related to the reawakening of an ancient demon -- so terrible that the CCS are unable to rank it -- and while theres no perfect pattern, a few things are clear. When someone carries a coin with the anomalys emblem, they will find themselves stumbling into the Whalefall Market when they round the corner of a familiar street. Once they arrive, theyll find a collection of merchants peddling meat infused memories, which are absorbed upon consumption. While most of these memories are relatively harmless, containing simple experiences such as the memory of euphoria over a promotion, some may instead contain experiences that are capable of inducing such despair that they induce demon-ification within their consumers.

Along with the message, the CCS also enclosed information about the location of one such emblazoned coin, where its been deposited within a safe thats attuned to its rightful retrievers biometrics.
