France will be confined tomorrow at 12 am.

I am stressed, but also angry, as I think that one of the reason why this confinement became a necessity is the stupid and irrational behavior of the population. People refused to respect the basic measures of prevention like cleaning their hand, respecting a security distance, or avoiding large gathering of people. Today, where I live, people started to fight in grocery stores. They fear a shortage of food and other supplies, and I think that got worse since the announcement of the closure of the German border. Where I live, many people are used to go shopping in Germany. These people who fight for pasta or rice don't even realize that they are one of the main cause of the shortages, and that their dangerous behaviour may help the virus to spread.

My mother is supposed to undergo a critical surgery this week. Her surgery might get reported, with disastrous consequences for her health. Also, she really, really, should avoid contracting the virus in her state. I'm terryfied for her
I already knew that I would not be able to visit her, because it would be too risky for her.
Now, with the confinement, I will have to wait for the result of her surgery (or the lack of it) completely alone, without even being able to get human contact, take some fresh her, or find distraction.

I didn't write this message to complain (if there's someone who should complain, it's my mother, not me) but to warn you.
Please respect the security measures. Clean your hand. Don't rush into grocery stores, don't hoard supplies for months, and, please, don't fight for food. Don't try to ignore restriction by going to bars and restaurants even if they're offially closed (yes, people did that here). Don't act selfish, think that there are people who are at risk and could die if they contract the virus.
If everybody does that, if you act more responsible, maybe a confinement won't be necessary in your country.

(I'm not necessarily saying that people here act irresponsable, see it as a testimony, a general message to the population)

I mean, I totally agree, if we could all be decent human beings this would go alot smoother xD Unfortunately there are... definitely some people who can't even do the basics right, like wash their hands properly, or not touching their face, or not coughing into their hands. I made a checklist of things people could just...*do* (if they were able, some people rely heavily on
public transportation for example, so saying that "anybody" could stop using public transportation is unreasonable...but you get what I mean.) that would be easy and safe. One way to think about it is as educating the less responsible people, and educating the responsible people on how to deal with the irresponsible people.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother, that really does sound tough and I hope she can get the surgery done quick and smoothly, and she gets back home safe and healthy!

(also tbh imo, the people who are fighting over a bag of rice? Stupid. If they were really so worried about their own safety, maybe they could have educated themselves awhile ago and kept an extra bag of rice or beans in their cupboard to begin with. But you know, that might just be me. I'm in Florida which means we always have extra food and medical equipment because....you know....hurricanes xD)

I get like you mean!
I feel like if people did the basic like washing their hands, and if only the ones who have no other choice used public transportation, it would be way safer for them.
It makes me mad when people cough on their hands and don't wash them before opening door or even cooking fois for other people (Yep. "Hahaha, don't worry, I don't have coronavirus". First, how can you be sure you don't have it? You can have it without showing any symptom. Second, even if you don't have coronavirus it's gross. I don't want flu / gastroenteritis / common cold either). If someone is not afraid of contracting the virus, it's their problem. But they should at least try to avoid infecting others.

I also hope my mother will be fine. I believe her case is considered as an emergency, but at the same time she lives in a region where there are active coronavirus cases. I don't know what her doctors will decide. I just wish they'll make the right decision to limitate the risk of long-lasting consequences on her health.

People here are not used at all of having to keep extra supplies. They don't how how long a pack of rice or a pack of toilet paper would last. I think the only people who have experienced real shortages are from generation of my grand-parents, who have known World War II.
Yeah, fighting for a bag of rice is mad!
At the same time I almost understand why someone who wants only a bag of rice is angry when the shelves are empty and they know some people bought more than 10 bags of rice.
I wish people could show more solidarity.
At least hopefully with the confinment this madness will cease.

I'd like future ping updates.

I'm currently living in Utah, having a few confirmed cases. The case of community spread was about 20 minutes away from me at a bar, where the man was working at the door.

I went from having to social distance to a mandatory 14 day self quarantine. There has been 3 confirmed cases at my high school, and they've dismissed all students and staff. The health department has made it clear we are to not leave our houses under any circumstances, unless told so by a medical professional. We also have to monitor our temperatures a few times a day. Our whole city is shutting down - school, restaurants, stores. Plus, the Governor has said that he expects it to last into July or August. What fun this is.

This whole thing has definitely flipped our lives around. It feels as if we're living in some dystopian universe.
