Right. But maybe he should actually figure out to take care of it. Because the basilisk won't last long if he doesn't even know what it eats.

Well, firstly, basilisks are insectivores. They're very capable of feeding themselves, and don't need very much food. In fact, if they get outside for a while they'll be fully fed in just a couple minutes, assuming there's bugs nearby. Second, they're semi-social creatures. In nature they form small packs of 2-5 basilisks called coalescences. They are very protective of the members of this small group, and baslisks always consider their owners part of their coalescence. In fact, it's very common for a basilisk to risk its life for its owner. Its best to litterbox train them, as that makes cleaning after it much easier. However, even when untrained they usually pick a spot to make those little 'deposits.'
