Linnette: When the Beasts died, their corporeal form was destroyed, but their spirits remained. They chose to be reincarnated, but they could only be reborn in a mortal body. The body, or vessel hosting their spirit, wouldn't be able to withstand the full extent of their magic, so they "chose" a person to be born to share and use their magic.
