one of my ishues with tauriel is her hair.. :P This is a very nerdy thing to know I am aware, but red hair is very rare for elves and is a trait of a certain line of elves. It's impossible for her to be part of that Line (as I have understood from the Tolkien fans who have studied his whole world etc)
So she having red hair is by Tolkien's writings, impossible...if they had made it brown there would have been zero ishues. I am not a tolkien purist. I don't mind making some changes to make things work better in screen. But something as hair collour could have been avoided,
As for Thranduil, haven't seen the movie so can not really give an opinion of the movie version, but his history is tragic and it's understandeble why he is so shelterd and so protective of his elves. I understand him completely and often feel he is basterdised to make the dwarves look more noble. Which they aren't (at leats not in the book) they go on a selfish quest for their gold. (The book is less HOME oriented and more gold and treasure oriented.)
And a grumpy Legolas? I am not happy about that... Legolas was known for being a bit odd amon elves, curios playfull..adventurous.
It hurts his character to make him grumpy before he became this relaxed curios playfull creature. He is supposed to have been like that all along...I don't like it.
And love triangle? Oh god no. We have special movies for that. I understand wanting to add some romance to the movie for the girls who watch it...but why a triangle? What is that good for? In a triangle somebody always gets hurt and I don't like that. They could have done a normal romance..
Legolas has never shown any interest in anybody romanticly, that was one if the awesome things about him so I hope that whatever part he plays in a triangle is very little.
But now both he and Kili, the fangirl favorites like Tauriel? (or so I have been told.) That is a very Marry sue thing to happen...I think this is wrong in every single way for different reasons.
1 It hurts Legolas his character
2 It makes Gimli's love for Galadril and friendship with Legolas less rare or special
3 Tauriel is a kick as warrior. Why does she need to be in a triangle just because she is a girl? Can't we just have a cool strong girl withoud the romance connected to her? (basicly I find it insulting to girls and it hurts Tauriel's character. So I fully agree with you on that.)
I have nothing Against an oc kick******lady elf. I do have something against her being the center of romance, of her being more wise/noble etc then the actual real characters, her being super young and having an impossible hair collor and making Legolas like her when he NEVER loved any girl ever (tolkien never gave him a girl, he didn;t need one. His heart was in other things like discovering things, friendships etc.
Sorry for the rant....But what I have read about the movie so far makes me feel like my fears have come true..
If they had to add romance with an elf and a dwarf, then at least pick a real dwarf looking dwarf. Now it seems a bit like : The boundries of races can only be crossed if they both are pretty.. I find that insulting too. How does that show the worth of love? How does that go beyong race/looks/culture?
What they should have done: Tauriel older/brown hair with Legolas being a close friend withoud anything romantic between them. Not from his side either. Tauriel either just liking Kili (not romanticly) or loving another dwrafy dwarf. ....
I still really look foreward to the movie. I missed the elves, and want to see Bard and Smaug and Bilbo. But I do think they went to Far and took to many liberties with this whole Tauriel thing. Had they been a bit less over the top with her I probably would not have ishues...
But again haven't seen the movie so I guess I should just wait and watch it before giving my final opinion about her and how she effects things for the Legolas/Gimli dynamics.
And again, I probably will think she is awesome/cool because she is a kick******lady despite all that. I just wished she could have been kick******withoud romance..or at expense of Legolas/ specialness gimli-legolas friendship.

That was probably the funniest scene in the whole movie. I almost passed out laughing when Legolas started jumping around on dwarf heads!
Ok lol this happens? That sounds very funny! I will look foreward to that scene...
On another note how where Bard and Smaug?

Well, it's not so much that Tauriel and Kili are both being all romantic-y. I think Kili just has a crush on her and she sees him as a cute little dwarf. I also get the feeling that nearer to the beginning she was just trying to tease Legolas by making remarks about how tall Kili is for a dwarf and such. You should have seen Legolas's face! He got sooooo jealous. xD
Smaug gets so much screentime it's AWESOME! He's so cool. :)
Bard was pretty awesome too. He's got a good family.

Really? If that's true that makes me feel better. Lol
And again REALLY? YAY SMAUG I admit I jumped trough the ceiling when I heard Benedict would voice him. His voice is so cool.
I really look foreward to his and Bilbo's chat.
Did you know the daughters of Bard are played by the daughters of the actor who plays Bofur?

Yup. I don't think they ever really openly admit that Legolas and Tauriel are even in love. Except for the part where Tauriel asks Thranduil if he'd ever let his son take her hand, or something like that. xD But, that's pretty much it (except for jealous looks and all). They don't kiss or anything mushy like that.
AND YES! He looks so cool! I just love Smaug.
Wait? Really? That's freaky.

Yeah I just noticed yesterday when overlooking the cast. James Nesbit plays Bofur, and then there where 2 other nesbits under the roles of Bard's daughters.
So I looked it up and jip, they are his kids. And another funny thing, James Nesbit wife ended up Playing Bilbo's mom in an extended scene of the first movie, or so I read.
Seems the Nesbit family is trying to play all races haha.

Ohh I just found out something else.
The movie age they have given Legolas that is almost 3000 years old is not correct.
Several tolkien studies/fans have done research about his age can not be older then 1000 years (his actual age is unknown, Tolkien never gave it) based on things that happend in the past and other events and importand things, Legolas is old compared to mortals. But certain big things have happend for elves in the past that he should have witnessed if he was around. But he lacks certain knowledge about things which should make him young (very basic explenation, if you want the detailed ones seek out the articles of the people below)
So he is in fact not much older then Tauriel and they could have grown up together. (I read that people found it strange that Evangeline said that her character and Legolas grew up together, and it is strange with the ages the movie has given him. But serious reseurch and studies have shown he is most likely under 1000.
There are 2 articles about his age, one by Ellen Brundige which concludes that he is between 900 or 800 and 500 years old, and one by Michel Martinez which puts him between 500 and maybe 900 years old.
The two authors used completely different lines of reasoning but arrived at about the same answer.
(this is a bit random information ..but I stumbeld across it and thought it was fun to share :P )

Really? Wow. I never knew any of that. I kinda tend to forget how long-lived elves are.
