Cool! Im not too set on a plot about that one, so itll take a bit of discussion to figure out

So first off, theres mermaid variants, like regular, whale, jellyfish, squid, deep sea, and all those types

Secondly, the story

We could do something involving humans or a mermaid war or something else

How about...a human boy/girl finds out hes half mermaid or something like that, and a outcasted mermaid/merman finds him, and suddenly theres this big strife between the humans and mermaids cause the human went missing for being under the ocean and only the 2 can stop it but then they discover a big magical secret or something...this was all off the top of my head :P

Maybe since this is some magical destiny thing, she can shift between different types of mermaids? I really love the whole mermaid variant sort of thing, but Im worried it might be too op compared to the human hybrid

Maybe she could also have some sort of curse she has to fix to balance it out? And it would also give them a reason for meeting. Maybe she was given the ability through some sort of magic that she then misused and it cursed her to slowly turn to stone
