Very slowly, Caige quirked one sandy-red eyebrow, but otherwise kept an expressionless face, as always. This woman was unlike any they had ever met before. She thought she was more broken than she was. That much was crucially, almost excruciatingly apparent. And yet, her voice held a bitter strength to it, even in her so pained state as she was. It was absolutely fascinating to listen to her speak. To simultaneously show life and death was a feat that very few had been able to accomplish before.
Quite quickly, in fact, Caige became rather obsessed with this woman, in a way. They wanted to learn more about her. She wasn't from around here, they noted, as determined by her slight accent. She seemed almost out of her element in this forest, suggesting a much less dense biome. Her skin was rich and dark, but they weren't quite sure what to make of that. They had never seen many dark people. The only ones they had referred to themselves as 'desert nomads'. Regardless, her skin was quite exquisite, observationally.
It was then that Caige remembered to respond to her words. "All beings fight," they stated. "Every being struggles. A squirrel fights for survival against a wild cat. A wolf fights for territory. Humans fight for a great many reasons. Why would it be, then, that one being who has struggled knows more of what a struggle is than another? Is everything not fighting constantly to keep itself afloat in a stormy sea? And note, that the universe has a use for everything. What one considers waste of the body is nourishment for the plants. An abandoned rabbit's den can become a storage of food for a chipmunk. A tree's fallen twigs can build a home for a bird. Nothing goes without a use in this world."
They closed their eyes briefly as a flash of memory hit them. It was only a few words, fragmented: 'Get...sh-...dark...ka-' and then it was gone, just as quickly as it came. The slightest angle of a frown pulled at Caige's lips, but then it quickly faded, as well. That had only just started happening since the monster had been flushed out. They opened their eyes again and returned their attention to the dying woman.

With a small noise of agreement, Therona swiped at her forehead with he back of her hand. Unfortunately, her gray skin tended to attract the sun much more than she would have liked. She took a moment to examine the strange man before her. His skin was tan, befitting someone who would live in this sort of biome. Naturally, to protect himself. His hair was also dark, offering a sharp contrast to his ocean blue eyes. Very interesting.
She gave a sigh and nodded. "I suppose you have a point there, my angel. Although I can't imagine why anyone would choose to live in the devil's armpit," she stated crudely, one corner of her ashy lips quirking up into a slight smirk.
Well, what could she say? She liked to live up to her name. Zikin. Nothing more than what no one wants to hear, see, or be near. A long time ago, she gave up trying to get people to like her. Why bother? When you've got gray skin and spider eyes, no one's going to think of you as anything other than the worthless evil. So why not, in retaliation, become the worthless evil?
"So, which direction is your village?"

D'jamila could feel her body becoming more energized and she bitterly wished she had met her end before this individual had found her. Things would have ended up being so much simpler.
Now, here she was actually feeling the urge to turn around and glare heavily at this person who had disturbed her final plans. She opened her mouth to tell them to go away, when the person spoke and with every word the fire in D'jamila belly turned into an inferno.
"Excuse me," she said, her voice not quite a shout, but very clearly angry, and immediately sat bolt upright, ignoring the pains shooting throughout her body, "How dare you presume to know what my purpose is? Or that I even have one? Things die, things lose their purpose, they become obsolete. That is a fact of life."
As her tirade came to an end, D'jamila was well aware of the great level of pain she as experiencing, though her fury was still keeping her from feeling most of it. She winced very slightly and finally took a good look at this person who had decided to interfere in her situation. Her initial reaction was...not what she was expecting to feel. She was surprised, and extremely perplexed. The individual was both masculine and feminine at the same time in different aspects of their face, to the point that she was not even sure which it was. That being said, she found herself staring in awe at the beautiful innocence of their face. It was almost like they had been made to be more beautiful because of their androgyny.
"Who are you?" she asked, her tone considerably softened.

Iskandar was finding himself becoming increasingly amused by this woman's mannerisms. It was clear she had become accustomed to being afraid of others, and he was sure she had very good reasons for being that way. She also seemed to have decided to embrace her strange nature, as though feeling that if the world was only going to see her as a bizarre creature, then that was what she would present to them. Seemed like such a lonely way to live life...
"I am nobody's angel," he said with a lopsided grin, "And the trees surrounding my village provides much shade and relief from the sun. It is an oasis, and we are much accustomed to travelers." He stood up and dusted off his pants, relieved that it seemed he had convinced her to accompany him. He looked at her, still getting used to her appearance, even though he had actually hoped he would live to see her arrival. That is,
if she was who he thought she was.
"It is towards the east," he said, and as a split second decision to try and show her some trust, he extended his hand towards her to help her up, "My name is Iskandar. Would you perhaps tell me your name?"

Very slowly, Caige blinked at the woman. She made no sense. She denies having a purpose, then declares that everything dies, as if that had no purpose in and of itself. They blinked again before speaking. "Things die. Scavengers get food. The plants get nutrients. Bacteria gets fed. Are you not contradicting yourself with that argument?" they explained in slight confusion. "Just because something is dead does not mean that it is useless."
They stopped when she did, staying very still as she seemed to be almost assessing something. Once again, they blinked, slowly but deliberately. They tired of this. Their job was done. As they were about to get up and move on, however, they heard her question and paused to think about it.
And yet, they could think nothing. The question made no sense. She was not speaking. They were hearing nonsense, and yet, they felt obligated to answer. And so, they answered with the only thing that they had thought when alone since they could remember. "Caige," they answered. And with that, they stood up. They became aware of their surroundings again, picked a direction, and began to walk that way.

Giving a slight shrug of her shoulders at his first comment, Therona examined him more as he spoke. He had a strong jaw, complete with some trimmed facial hair. His eyes were still what struck her most about him. The rest of him looked so harsh in comparison to the sea flowing within his irises. They were absolutely breathtaking. A bitter thought crossed her mind, though, reminding them how normal of an eye color that was. How people probably never thought his eyes any less than beautiful.
She quickly tried to avert her thoughts from that dark subject. Perking up slightly at his words, Therona took an excited step forward before remembering herself and falling back. "Thank the Gods. I've been looking for a riparian area for quite a while now. But all I ever see is shrubs and cacti and dirt." Inside and out.
Judging by the sun, she determined which way was east and glanced in that direction before returning her gaze to him. A small, lopsided smile graced her lips as she took his hand. It became increasingly harder to breathe - she hadn't touched another person in who knows how long. But his hand felt strong as it grasped hers, and she let him pull her up. After all, wouldn't he have shown her some malice by now if he meant it?
At his question, she gave a little start. For some odd reason, she hadn't been expecting it. Zikin. The name played at her tongue. That's all she was known by now, anyway. The smile faded from her face, but then slowly came back as she zoned in on a decision. "Therona Edertasuna," she told him. A fresh place meant a fresh start.

Everything had been turned upside down now, and D'jamila was not happy about it. She was fuming inside at having her plans meddled with. What did this person...Caige, she thought scathingly, know about anything. They were nothing special, though even as she thought it she knew it was false. There was something about Caige, something unusual. She still wasn't sure whether they were male or female, and something nagged at the back of her mind, something she had only seen once before, but she dismissed it immediately. She was still being consumed with fury.
"Well, Caige," she began nastily, starting to pick herself up and brush leaves and dirt off of her brilliantly colors clothing, before realizing that Caige was walking away from her, "Hey, wait just a minute!" She tore after the retreating figure, picking her dress up as she went, frustration painted on her face. She caught up with Caige rather quickly, since they weren't moving very fast.
"I was not finished with you, yet. You have meddled in my plans to meet an end, something for which I am NOT grateful. The least you can do is direct me towards the nearest village." At this point D'jamila's physical injuries, which did still exist, overwhelmed her again after such a burst of effort, and she felt her legs give way until she was once again on the ground, though at least in a sitting position this time.

Iskandar was not a vain man...okay, well maybe a little. He knew many considered him to be good looking, incredibly handsome even, but to him it came with a price. His eyes, which were a highly unusual color among his people, were a stark reminder of the mother he never knew, and how bitterly his father would look at him when he was a boy, these blue eyes tormenting him over the woman he had lost. It was not Iskandar's fault of course, but he had been made to bare the brunt of his father's pain.
"Well, thats a the desert for you," he said, quirking another smile at his own amusement, "But we are very fortunate to have such a prosperous oasis to call our home. It brings many travelers our way, which allows our economy to thrive."
He spoke to her very easily, something he was sure she was not used to, and Iskandar had every reason to try and put her at ease. It actually was not very difficult. Her appearance was very strange, and in an involuntary reflex kind of way he was somewhat put off by it, but he did his level best to hide and trace of thoseefeelings. He let his hand linger on hers for a moment before letting go.
"It is nice to meet you, Therona," he said sincerely, giving his head a formal bow and extending his arm in an easterly direction, "Lets be on our way, shall we?"

Ever so slowly, Caige came to a stop as the woman began squawking about again. And, just as slowly, Caige turned to face her again, their face as blank as always. They watched her fall to her knees, unaffected by her harsh words. After all, she was merely a being, and beings could only exist and harm as long as they would be, and she was the only being within the vicinity, with no one to provide any proof that she was being, hence making her a being. Perhaps, thought Caige, she is not a being. If she has no proof of her being, then the chance does stand that she is not a being.
"There is a village due north," they stated in spite of the woman's nonexistence, which seemed obvious to them now. A question was asked, and an answer must be provided, even if said question did not exist in and of itself.
They looked around themself, taking in the beautiful scenery once more. Nature has a way of showing surprises even in its more plain and expected views. A squirrel chittered along the ground, approaching Caige and the woman. Caige cocked their head at it, and then retrieved a blackberry from a bush. They knelt down and held the berry out, in their hand, to the squirrel. The creature approached cautiously, but Caige remained still as a statue. After a minute, the squirrel climbed onto the hand and munched on the blackberry. Caige couldn't help a smile as they reached out their other hand, moving slowly and unthreateningly, and stroked the squirrel's tail. The creature allowed it.

Therona ran a hand along her silver braid, making sure it was still intact. It was a nervous habit that she had unfortunately fallen victim to a while back. She gave a small nod, not wishing to respond to Iskandar's words, and followed him as he started towards the oasis he had promised. At least from here, she couldn't see any indication of a riparian area, but decided if he was lying to her, she could just tear his throat out with her teeth, no big deal.
It wasn't like she hadn't been lied to before, anyhow.
Even as she gazed about the plain desert, dehydrated and hot, she couldn't help but notice a sort of beauty about it in spite of herself. She would wager a hefty bet on this place looking the exact same no matter the weather or temperature, and that almost made her feel secure in knowing. The place was so consistent, too, and that was something she had never known before.
However, she knew that she wouldn't be staying long. She needed to find someone who could lift the curse on her. She would allow this small break with Iskandar to get food and water, but then she needed to be on her way. She needed to travel forth, and find the legendary Ispilu Cave. If it was real, it was the only thing that would be able to save her magic. Even now, she could feel the restricted power in her bubbling ferociously. She only had so long to get the curse reversed before her magic, as unstable as it was, exploded.
