The silence didn't bother Thea. She liked to have time to think. She thought a lot,
about a wide variety of subjects. It was the one thing that separated her from her father and the rest of her family. In looks she was the spitting image of Dudley, squat and blonde. Except for her eyes, which were her favorite feature specifically because no one else in the family had them. No one would tell her from which relative she had inherited the almond shaped, bottle green eyes from, but she loved them nonetheless.

Her brow arched upwards as the boy introduced himself. Scorpius? Really? Well, she certainly understood parents and their ridiculous naming ideas. "My name is Thea." It felt strange to actually be conversing with another child her age. It was something that didn't occur very often, but she was surprised to find it far from unpleasant.

"So...do you know much about the school?" The words felt foreign on her tongue as Thea made an attempt at conversation, but she felt it was a fair attempt.

Albus was bored. B-O-R-E-D, bored. He had following Rose through the corridors as they tried to find a compartment. Of course, thanks to their parents and their pleasantries, they had gotten onto the train to late to find a any that were unoccupied. So, they had just wandered aimlessly, garnishing the attention of more than one passerby who recognized them for who they were. Thankfully, since James had already gone to school a few years back, there was not much "star power" left for the rest of them. Which suited Albus just fine.

"Rose," Albus mentioned, tapping his cousin on the arm, "Maybe we should just find a suitable compartment and sit down. My feet are starting to get sore."

Scorpius gave a sort of nervous shrug. Thea. Nothing more, nothing less. This was a strange situation he had got himself into... He briefly wondered what his father would think of his cowardice around this mysterious, strong-headed girl. At least, she seemed strong-headed. She scared off a group of fifth years, for crying out loud.

He looked out the window, watching the world pass them by. "I suppose I do," he told her. "I come from a long line of people who attended Hogwarts. I'm a pureblood, though I don't think it really matters much. My father used to be real stuck-up about it, and it led to some bad choices, so he raised me not to be the same. I still am proud to be a Malfoy, regardless," he responded.

She was likely a muggleborn, wasn't she? She seemed like one. Not that muggleborns had a certain way about them... Well, they kinda did. But that didn't matter. What mattered was she had an odd sort of charm about her that he couldn't quite understand.

-

As they traveled through the corridors, Rose kept her chin up. That's what her mother taught her. She was oh, all too aware of the eyes on them. Lucky Albus. James had already come before him. He wasn't receiving as much of the attention. It was more her, the firstborn child of Ron and Hermione, who attracted the eyes. The struggles of being the oldest.

Oddly enough, she felt kind of...sad. She sort of missed her idiot brother already. She couldn't imagine what a damper it would put on their relationship when she was going to be gone for months at a time. He had a few more years until he would join her at Hogwarts, though.

"Well, I don't know where you expect us to go, Albus," Rose retorted. "All of the compartments are full, dummy. I'm thinking we might be able to raid James and his friends. Or maybe Victoria?" she suggested.

Yes, thinking about James and Victoria, she definitely missed her immediately family already. She was always very close to her father especially. Although she had her mother's intelligence, she had her father's personality. And because of that, it meant her father and her could get into much fun trouble together. Brilliant minds, and all. Then again, they always regretted it when her mother would catch and condemn them.

Thea could feel herself scowling as Scorpius spoke and she tried hard to soften her expression. It was just the natural way her face looked when she was thinking deeply. She listened to every word the boy said, thought she found that very little of it made sense. Pureblood? What like a dog? (Thank goodness she had enough sense not to say that out loud...)

"You definitely don't seem stuck up," she stated bluntly, "Though, you could probably do with learning how to defend yourself a little better." It was a lot of talking in one shot for her and she suddenly felt a little self-conscious about it. She turned her face towards the window, letting the fast moving landscape calm her down.

This was something she had tried to prepare herself for, though poorly it seemed. She knew that by receiving her Hogwarts letter she was going to be thrust into a world she knew little about, and be around other children her own age that had things in common with her that she was only just now coming to understand. She was going to have to try breaking out of her comfort zone, to try and interact with other people on a more personal basis.

"I don't know much about Hogwarts," she said, her voice barely above a murmur, "My parents aren't magical.
My dad tried to tell me some stuff, but he wouldn't tell me where he had gotten his information so its hard to say whether he even knew what he was talking about." She turned her face towards Scorpius slowly, and he knew her face was still not a picture of friendliness, but she was trying. "Whats it like?"

-----
A very large sigh exited Albus's lips as he spared an absent glance at his surroundings. He never could understand Rose's abhorrence towards crowds. He simply ignored nearly all of the people around him. It was the easiest way to deal with it all. Still, he cared about his cousin and he could still feel her anxiety hanging around her like a cloud, so the best thing for him to do was to try and get her out of these corridors.

"There," he said suddenly, "That compartment only has two people in it." Without waiting for Rose's response he walked over to the door and slid it open, not bothering to look closely at the others sitting on the benches.

He caught a glimpse of pale blonde hair and froze in the doorway for a moment, his face frozen in a blank expression. He had heard so many stories about the Malfoys, knew that his father still harbored some animosity towards the family despite their recent reformation and his attempts not to instill the old prejudices in his children. Albus had little opinion on them himself, but even so, he had a hard time being in such a close proximity to Scorpius. Without a word to Rose, he turned on his heels and bolted back down the corridor,
leaving her at the door to the compartment.

As he had expected, the girl - Thea - turned out to be Muggleborn. That didn't really mean anything, though. In fact, Scorpius was kind of interested in how two nonmagic people could conceive a magic child. He tried to study the genetics, like the full-blown nerd he embraced of himself, but it was sort of hard when he was only eleven years old.

Regardless, he couldn't help a small grin on his face at her words. Oh, how to respond... "Having magic is..." he began, and then hesitated. What were these words he was looking for? He searched for a moment, his gaze having drifted to the ceiling and his mouth forming incoherent words. "It's like... Well, it's like having an extension of your own spirit that you can always rely on to be at your disposal. It's like a limb," he settled on, returning his bright gaze to hers.

He reached into his schoolbag and retrieved from it a well-worn book called Hogwarts, A History. He handed the book across the compartment to her. "And Hogwarts itself, while I've never been there, my parents told me is like another home. My father acted like he hated it a whole lot when he went there, but he confessed to me that he just didn't want to admit how much he liked it. The staircases move, and there's hidden rooms. I even heard that the ceiling in the Great Hall changes," he rambled slightly, completely enraptured by the knowledge that he was spewing to this strange girl.

In fact, he was so enraptured that when the compartment door slid open, he jumped at least a foot in the air, losing momentary sense of himself. It took all of his willpower not to yelp, and he somehow managed that decency, at least. His eyes traveled to the visitors, one of which bolted almost immediately.

-

Hair so light it wavered between silver and blond. Piercing green eyes. A lean, lanky physique. No doubt stood in Rose's mind that, Albus' brilliant self had chosen the compartment that Scorpius Malfoy sat in. She knew it was on accident, but that didn't change the fact that the son of the once-enemy of their fathers and her mother sat in the compartment that Albus had suggested to them.

She was about to come up with some sort of apology, say that they had opened the wrong compartment by mistake, when out of the infinite bravery inherited from his father, Albus seemed to disappear. She stared after him, stunned, for a moment before remembering herself and clearing her throat, lifting her chin, and staring straight at the two people in the compartment. The other one, a rough-looking girl that sharply contrasted with the weak Malfoy boy, didn't seem all too friendly, either.

Albus might have been a wimp that screamed and ran away from the legendary 'Malfoy', but she refused to act the same. After all, it was rude to assume that Scorpius was akin to his father. Not all Malfoys were bad. There was not just black and white, she decided. Grey areas existed, and she wanted to give this kid his full credit until he either lost it or proved himself kind.

She cleared her throat again, her mind set. "Sorry, but is this seat open?" she stated more than asked, pulling her luggage inside and pushing it above their heads, promptly sitting down on the same side as Scorpius, albeit on the other end of the seat.

It would have been hard for Thea to explain to someone in words how she was feeling in this moment. She had always been much better at writing down her thoughts on paper. The truth was, she was feeling the happiest and most content she had felt in a long time. This last year had been extremely difficult for her, with all of the increasingly off things that kept happening while she was at home and at school. Now of course she knew it was magic that had caused those things, but that didn't help the tension that it had caused with her mother and older brother.

Thea actually perked up a little when Scorpius pulled the rather large and well loved looking book. She accepted it with the barest shadow of a smile, and flipped through the pages as Scorpius talked. She liked the way he talked. It reminded her of the way that she wrote, and it impressed her that he felt bold enough to speak in such a manner. She lifted her head to look at him, opening her mouth to ask him a question, when the door to their compartment opened suddenly.

As Scorpius jumped in his seat, Thea cast a sharp glance at the two standing in the doorway. Well, at least there were two, but she barely got a look at the boy as he seemed to disappear almost as soon as he opened the door. This left a young girl, clearly the same as Thea and Scorpius, standing there alone. She had bright red hair and very intelligent hazel eyes that seemed to be assessing both of them with great care. Thea glanced at Scorpius to see what he might be thinking, but the girl spoke and she cast her gaze back at the doorway.

"Um," Thea started, at a loss for words, "No go ahe...well, I mean yes, its open." The stammering made her blush furiously, and she quickly looked back down at the book, though the words seem to be a blur to her now as she fought to get herself back under control.

Of course. Rose Weasley. What a coincidence, Scorpius thought to himself sourly. Well, it wasn't like he didn't like her. Not specifically, anyway. It was just... She didn't like him. And kind of a mutual dislike sprouted from that. More of a 'I don't like you for not liking me' sort of deal. At least, how could she think any more of him than a savage, arrogant pureblood? His father had, admittedly, made an impression on her parents and her uncle. And not a good one, at that. He had no doubt in his mind that his father's childhood reputation preceded him. She had probably heard all kinds of stories.

At this thought, he avoided her gaze, staring down at his hands, which sat idly in his lap. He willed his face not to flush with color, though he wasn't quite sure it worked completely. He was a little surprised when Thea spoke up. She was the quiet sort, he had noticed before, so it probably took some courage for her to actually speak, even though, he noticed as he glanced up at her, she was blushing herself. He shot her a brief encouraging smile, trying to hide his own nerves.

After a minute of silence, he decided to swallow his anxiety. After all, what did it matter if Rose already had a full impression of him? He would just have to change that, wouldn't he? That's what his mother said. He was determined to make friends at Hogwarts, and although he already had Thea - could she be called a friend at this point? He thought so - it didn't mean he couldn't make more. And the daughter of two of his father's old enemies, at that! He would at least try.

He brought himself to meet Rose's gaze without visible fear. "I'm Scorpius," he introduced himself, in spite of the fact that she probably already knew his name. She shot him a look of confusion, but then seemed to understand what he was communicating.

-

Obviously, the girl was as nervous as Scorpius seemed to be, though she didn't show it until she had begun to speak, Rose noticed. That was fine. After all, she had just barged into their compartment and taken a seat like she owned the place. She felt a hint of shame. She hadn't even asked, had she? Ah, well, she decided. No use crying over spilled milk, right? Best to make the most of the situation she had so stubbornly put herself into.

She flashed a rather charming smile at the girl, trying to help her calm down a little. And then, Scorpius introduced himself to her specifically when their eyes met. She couldn't help a hint of confusion cloud her features. Why would he introduce himself to her? Then, she realized - he probably didn't want his new friend to know about his father.

So, she took the bait and played along. "My name is Rose," she told him kindly, and then returned her gaze to the girl carefully. "And what's your name?" she asked lightly, trying to make conversation. Though, this girl didn't seem like she was one to talk much. That was alright. Rose had always had her father's charm. Well, not always. But sometimes she could be charming. When she wanted to be. "And what House do you want to be in?" she added on in afterthought.

Heart still pounding in her chest, Thea risked another glance upwards once she felt that she had regained enough control over herself. She saw Scorpius smile briefly at her and she gave him a very small smile of her own in return. It was thoughtful of him to seem concerned for her given how short a time they had known each other. But then, they both appeared to be having the same problem with socializing,
though Thea did not realize there was such a history between these two.

With steady hands Thea set the book Scorpius has handed to her earlier next to her on the seat and made a bold move to lock eyes with the other girl. She hoped this didn't come across as overly aggressive, but it was the only way she knew.

"My name is Thea." There, that wasn't so hard. She was trying very hard to keep her face from going scowl-y but it was hard to say how well it was working. Of course, all bets went out the window when she heard Rose's question. Her odd expression of thought came over her, brows knitting together, the corners of her mouth turning down in a slight frown, and she was sure he looked anything but friendly. "Houses? What do you mean?"

The whole situation was too awkward, Scorpius decided. Too awkward. He had never been a very social person himself, but this was taking it a bit far. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He just had to keep reminding himself that he was not what people thought him to be. The Malfoy family was misjudged, and had been since the end of the Second Wizarding War. The stories floated around - he knew them.

In all honestly, he was kind of glad he had met Thea already. Even though she was kind of scary, and he was a complete weakling (there was no point in trying to deny it to himself), she didn't know him. She didn't know his family's histories. The stories. The accusations. It was a completely clean slate with her, and it was all Scorpius could do to hope to Merlin that Rose didn't say something that could screw up his empty plate.

When Thea asked about what the Houses were, he stood and slipped carefully over to her side of the compartment. He lifted the book and pointed to the colored Hogwarts crest on the front cover. He made sure there was still distance between the two of them, as being closer to her now made her slightly more intimidating.

"About a thousand years ago, Hogwarts was founded by four great magickers: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. They had different ideals about what they valued, so they created four different Houses and sorted the students with a wise old hat. The four houses are, accordingly, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin," he began, and then glanced at Rose cautiously. She seemed eager to speak, so he stopped himself there for her to take over.

-

Rose found herself ultimately bored by Scorpius' historical approach to explaining the Houses. There were much simpler ways to do it, didn't he know? She couldn't help a small grin as she realized that Scorpius Malfoy, the son of the boy who would tease her mother for being a nerd, was a nerd himself. There was some sort of irony to that. She wouldn't tease him for it, though - she didn't see the point in it. After all, she could be quite geeky about certain subjects, as well. Quidditch? She could talk about it for hours.

Especially the Chudley Cannons, oh boy.

She sat up a bit in her chair as she read the boy's expression, giving her permission to speak. Not that she needed it. "Basically," she sighed, trying to reattain Thea's attention - what an odd, unique name, she noted - from Scorpius having taken it. "The four Houses each value something different, as Scorpius said."

A moment's pause ensued as she tried to figure out how she would word her next statement. Then she sighed again and decided to just dive into it. "Gryffindor believes in courage. Not just courage against enemies, but courage against friends. Courage against odds. Justice against villainry. Hufflepuff believes in kindness. Not just kindness to friends, but to enemies, and strangers, and animals. Kindness towards the earth, and humanity. The Ravenclaws believe in creativity. A lot of people think they're just the smart kids, but they're actually the ones who value extraordinarity, not intelligence. They like to think outside the box. And the Slytherins value ambition. A lot of people think they're bad, because ambition can be used to do a lot of bad things. But really, the Slytherins just like aiming high. They like a cunning person, someone who can get farther with less."

The feeling of being around other children her own age, and in such a non-aggressive setting, was still very foreign to Thea. However, she was finding herself enjoying the situation more and more. The tension that had existed between Rose and Scorpius was still noticeable, but it seemed to have abated slightly as the two of them tried to tell her more about Hogwarts.

When Scorpius got up and sat next to her, Thea's face paled slightly and her green eyes widened. Her hands tensed around the book, but when he continued on as normal she relaxed her fingers just as he slipped the book from her hands. He began explaining about the Houses at Hogwarts, but at first she wasn't hearing what he was saying. She was still trying to process the fact of his proximity and realizing that he was not acting like most others who had ever gotten this close to her.

"A hat?" she asked suddenly, that having been the only think that penetrated her thoughts. Before she was able to receive an answer, her attention shifted to Rose as the other young girl took up the explanation.

It was slightly easier to follow along with what Rose was saying, though Thea was still very aware at how close Scorpius was sitting to her. It was not unpleasant, and she did not wish him to get up, but it was not something she had ever experienced before. She had never really had friends. She tried to keep her focus on Rose's explanation of the houses, and her first impression was that it seemed...odd. They were all witches and wizards, all united by what made them different than the rest of the world, and yet as soon as they were able to come together the first thing that was done was to...separate them?

"I see," Thea said simply when Rose was finished, "So which are you hoping for?" She was not prepared to answer the question herself, but she was curious of what the others would answer.

Thinking for a moment, Scorpius realized that he had never really questioned the stories of the sorting hat. Of course, it had always just seemed natural that a place as magical as Hogwarts would have something so strange. After all, he had mentioned moving staircases, hadn't he? And ghosts? Well, he wasn't sure if he mentioned ghosts, but Thea would find out soon enough. Regardless, he only realized now how absurd the idea of a talking hat must seem to a muggleborn.

"Well, yes. A hat," he said before realizing that Rose was about to continue speaking. The piercing look she sent him did not go unnoticed, but it did go unacknowledged.

A small grin tugged at the corner of his lips at the confusion on Thea's face. "There's rumor that the hat had belonged to Godric Gryffindor himself. When they decided they wanted different students, the founders had decided to make the hat so that it could see into our minds and souls and decide which teacher best suited us. The hat sings, too," he explained, adding the last part for good measure.

He hoped Thea didn't notice his avoidance of the house question. Although he was proud to be from a Slytherin family, he feared the stereotypes and prejudices against the Slytherin house. It was silly, perhaps, he knew, but he found it easier to just pretend he was unaware her last question was directed at him as well as Rose.

-

When the wisps of Thea's thought entered Rose's mind, she couldn't help but wonder just who exactly this girl was. Rose had to suppress a frown as she considered the notion - united, and yet, divided. She had never really considered that, and it left an uneasy feeling in her stomach.

She was about to respond when Scorpius spoke up. Her hazel gaze turned on him, and if looks could cut, her glare would have hurt the Malfoy more than that one spell her dad told her about (though Mom interrupted before she could learn the name of it!). And, of course, her dad was too sneaky to think the name for her to casually overhear. Or perhaps, he was just too terrified of her mother.

Although she had been born a Legilimens, sometimes, she wish she hadn't. It came in handy every now and then, but when she would overhear the wrong thoughts, well... Rose knew much more about certain things than she was sure she should.

Her attention was brought back to Thea's question when Scorpius finished. "Sorry, he's terribly rude," she shook her head disapprovingly. "The founders each had different interpretations of teaching, you know," she added, acting as if it were afterthought. "Anyway, I come from a family of strict Gryffindors," she explained. "So, obviously, I am hoping for Gryffindor."
