If this is deemed as game-breaking (IE how Chi said that Krin's "no" on features like these comes from the ability to get new traits from essences instead of cheaper alternatives such as a gene-switcher), then I just say that it should be a heavy diamond feature. Like 300 diamonds.
In fact, I remember the gene switching suggestion from way back. It suggested something similar to this:
-pick a trait slot, have it be changed to any trait within the slot
-works on all pets, not just tamed, so even in offspring it can be used
-has lesser and greater versions, where lesser is random in the slot, and greater is where you can pick the trait you want
I didn't exactly like this suggestion for the same reason Chi said.
Also, I think that either exclusives are fine the way they are, with not being able to use mutators of any sort. (dyes are fine though, you can dye any pet...)
If they were to be mutatable, the exclusives should be converted to tamed pets. But exclusives are only gotten through special means, so it'd be game-breaking to try and mutate or scramble etc their genes.
Edit: grabbed a few links.
First is a few of the suggestions similar to this, which garnered support.

Second is the quote from Krin that Chidori refers to. How the admins feel now may be different, since this was months ago. But I still see the reason behind this quote.
This is most likely something we won't add. One of the main (if not the main) sources of content for Sylestia atm is new genes and mutations. If there were a way to just alter current pets to use newly released traits, it would greatly devalue the demand for creating new pets, breeding, capturing, etc.
Atm, we allow an unlimited amount of pet dyes to be used which I think is as far as we'll go in regards to altering pets unconditionally.

DOH! -facepalm- I forgot about that. Okay, yeah, that makes sense. Luckily eggs that you find in the areas are considered tamed -eyes epic HD Ryori in my hatchery that will soon grow up-

While I understand the argument about this, I can't tell you how overwhelmingly upset I was when I spent 8 hours mojo'ing for the Nevermore Aurleon only to have it hatch with the dreaded Toucan Beak trait.. I literally felt defeated. Or how every single one of my MC Ryoris hatched with Kitsune. Like, really?
There's got to be some way we can work this out so that we can at least fix traits we absolutely don't want. I literally would rather not have the trait at all than anything. Or maybe something that flips carries and visible traits/genes?

(edit: woops still typing rest of reply, clicked post too early
edit: done)
I felt overwhelmingly disappointed when my 1vis ryori hatched with traits I found to be my least favorite (marbled).
I felt super upset when I bid the highest bid on a mojo pet in the eggling auction, higher than the most valued 3vis wheel pet, only to get a 2vis RC ryori that was pretty disappointing too.
(I even remember the numbers too, sorta. The 3vis vampiric griffi was like 13-13.5mil and my bid on a 2vis mojo RC ryori (I didn't know it was 2vis, only that it was RC) was like 13.8mil.)
I felt sad that I got an exclusive Spooky pet, a theme that used to be a tamed pet. It only had 1vis and wasn't mutatable, so I set it on public sale (for a few million). The buyer was also disappointed that it was not mutatable, despite it having a decent gene.
(in this case it's more of a problem that there are exclusive pets of themes that used to be tamed, mutatable pets
so people may be unhappy about the fact that they can't use a mutator on it, moreso than changing the trait with a scrambler)

In response to these things, I figure that's how life works. S:
Like when kids in class each get a colored toy as a reward but they don't get to choose what color the toy is, they all get toys whether they like it or not. And they're told "you get what you get and you don't get upset."
At least we get to attempt to trade our pets around for things we may like. Even if we worked really hard for the pets we wanted in hopes of it having traits we like.
Having the control to fix our own pets to get rid of the stuff we find undesirable is convenient.
But if this item, the genetic scrambler (or what have you) isn't possible, users are still able to try and trade or breed around the trait. Which isn't as good, but still works with what we have.
However...
It's counterproductive to tell all the users with pets that have traits that they don't like "wow that stinks, suck it up and trade it away, sell it, at least you HAVE a pet!"
But I do think that a genetic scrambler is a bit OP. It takes away something about reality, that traits that we don't like may come up in the pets we want most (what if the next themed griffi I get that I really want has a trait I dislike?).
But taking that away really does take away the challenge of going around it. Or the possibility of giving a genuine pet with no alterations to someone who may genuinely like it, since another man's trash is another's treasure and stuff.
It would be ideal if everyone got what they wanted.
But it wouldn't be much of a challenge if that was the case. We all ideally want that, but that kind of game is one-sided to the player and their preferences, compared to a randomizer that gives every trait some random chance of popping up.

This would be AMAZING for those with mystical pets with 6 carries that can't be mutated! Great idea. ^u^
