I believe some sort of 'extended family tree' is either in the making or has been suggested. For this to be possible, released relative of a pet have to still be in the system. This way, you can view the appearance and stats of the ancestors of your or someone elses pet. So although released pets can't be captured in the wild, it will be important to keep them in the system to retrieve released pets or to check heritage.
I would HATE it if my released pets could be found in the wild, for the very reason that Krin has said he would never do it. Some people have breeding projects and release the "failed" or the "in-between" pets because they don't want others to have them. Zarhail releases a lot of high stat project pets and I'm sure he would be furious if someone was able to catch them in the wild, just like I would be if someone could catch my project pets...
I wouldn't want people catching my released project pets either. Especially the almost-there-but-not-quite pets.
It would be nice to someday be able to buy back accidentally released pets. It so rarely happens with me though, because of the fact you have to type in the name of the pet and click two different things.

Maybe some sort of Sylestie wildlife reserve and a Sylestie shelter?
When a user releases a Sylestie, they could choose to put it in the reserve so others can't catch or adopt it, but the user that released it can pay a fee to have it back.
Or, they could send it to the shelter where others can adopt it.
It would be a useful way to make room in the stables if you would prefer that some of your extra Sylesties be enjoyed by others.
