At Shadow's request, here are a few more pictures of the little bird I've taken since this post was made. Unfortunately, she (We had her gendered wrong! Oops!) is not a fan of the camera, so there are only a few. I'll continue to update when she does decide to pose for pictures, though.
It was chilly yesterday - my arm was a good source of heat to snuggle up against!
She accepted my sister as part of her 'flock'
Legs are good perches!

Oh how sweet! I love that you have her and that she's so well taken care of in a great home. These kinds of stories I love to hear. If you wouldn't mind, could you keep us updated with pictures? That would be great. I'm interested in seeing her grow and to hear more stories about her adventures. :)
Speaking of birds...my youngest son came in the other day and said he thought one of our cats had a bird...I looked and sure enough... >_< I walked out just as she tossed the poor thing into the air and then pounced on it. I ran over there and shooed her off. The little bird, it was a baby with all it's feathers, seemed stunned but not injured. I picked it up and it just sat there, then closed it's eyes and seemed to go to sleep. I fixed up a small box with a soft cloth and put it in there for the night so that it could recover and rest, covering it with another cloth. In the morning, it was active and alert so I took it out and it flew off. It wasn't the best flyer, it was just learning, so I kept the cats in the house for a few hours until I was sure it had gotten away. I'm glad I was in time. :) I keep bells on my cat's collars so birds, etc, can hear them coming, but this was a little guy which is the only reason I think the cat got it. At least it ended well. I feed all the birds and don't want the cats getting them and usually they can't, thank God.
Oh, and how did you find out the baby was a girl? Isn't it hard to tell the gender on birds? I can never tell unless it's something obvious like a cardinal.

Haha I don't mind at all, I just might need some prompting once in a while so I remember to update! Although they will slow once September starts, because I'm leaving for school on August 29, so I'll only get to see her on weekends and such.
Oh, I'm glad you got to the little fledgling in time! Cats are kind of terrifying when it comes to birds, I'm honestly surprised the baby lived through the night. Normally even a single bite is enough to slowly kill them, since cats have so much bacteria in their mouths. And learning to fly is definitely when they're most vulnerable. We had two more injured baby sparrows that we found on our property, but there wasn't much we could do for them unfortunately - one had a broken wing and the other we just couldn't get to, and no rehab centers will take sparrows because they're considered pests around here. The only time they can be kept like my little bird is if they're found as naked babies and raised, a fledgling would not have done well stuck inside. I'm glad the little one you found managed to stay alive!
Yeah, gendering is hard. It was mostly a guess that it was male, and we guessed wrong. ^^ She molted at about nine weeks old and with her adult feathers we were able to tell the gender. At this time of year male sparrows have black spots on their cheeks and white on their chests, while the females have neither. So we're pretty sure now ours is a female.

Loved the story, and it was well documented! :) A lot of work put into raising such a tiny little creature eh? :)
