So will you be simply removing the need to choose a gender at all at registration, then?

Data or not, that's still rather uncomfortable, having to choose between two options, neither of which you fit!

I have added an option to omit your choice. Therefore, if someone isn't comfortable choosing from one of the two options, they can choose to omit.
