While I think it's best to leave the pre-tags out of the compendium just to save the sanity of people who want to collect all the official tagged pets, could there be some official listing of them somewhere eventually? I know there's the thread that we have that has the official colors but I wouldn't expect someone to go hunting for that. Every now and then someone gets lucky and gets to buy or trade for pre-tags, it'd be nice for them to easily see what colors they should be since they swung so much back then. Or at least to have some official acknowledgement of the site's earlier themed pets.
I still honestly would love to see them eventually tagged.
This is an intended mechanic since the beginning. We have obviously dialed it way down from the early days, but it still is there for a reason. We want pets to have variance and we want some to be more precise than others, thus increasing the value of those with truer hexes.
Now, with the Themed Pet Codex, it's at least possible and much easier to compare live pets with the official colors.
I know it's intentional, that's why I'm begging for it to be changed.
In theory it seems that more accurate colors would be more valuable. But even with the codex, absolutely no one determines value based on how true the colors are to the theme.
Never once have I seen a player directly seeking or willingly paying more for color precision. I don't know of a single player who does something like collect themed pets that have RGB values within a +/- 5 range of the official colors. Nobody finds a pet and shows it off saying "wow look how the G3 is exactly the right hex!"
What players do care about is traits. I have seen many players directly seeking or willingly paying more for higher vis. I do know of players who collect 2v, 3v, epic+, legendary/mythical rarity pets. People do find pets and show them off saying "wow look how this hatched a legendary!" I don't run to the generator to see how accurate a pet's colors are before pricing it. In fact, I don't look at color accuracy at all. I'll take note of its traits and price based on other pets with a similar quantity of traits on advanced search.
In practice, the only thing color variance has done is further reduce the value of pets that are already less valuable on the basis of traits. And it reduces their little value left in breeding. You won't see most colors on pets that don't have many visible traits; they'll show up in offspring. My 1c griffi is already practically worthless, and it's made worse by the fact that her colors are so awful. I want that trait in my project, but it may not be worth all the high color swing.
I'm not suggesting color variance get eliminated altogether. But it's just so much and it's frustrating to deal with. It would be nice to see themes at least be somewhat close to color they're supposed to be. I don't want to grind for hours in the final stage of the end game zone looking for a purple theme and finding it green. I don't want to spend a ton of time perfecting a design only to have half the pets screwed over by a game mechanic I have zero control over. I don't want to work on a project with generations of purebreds that look wrong.

While I agree that I'd always love to see colors closer to actual themes, I want to be sure you know about how themes, both originals and purebred offspring, can have their colors fully reset by using one lesser dye? I know a lot of people don't like nurturing but if you need some dyes to fix something I don't mind throwing some your way if it'll help with a project. I usually get so many scales during leaderboards I don't mind helping someone out with a project.

I'm aware of the dye reset (it was mentioned in my first post) and I appreciate the offer, I've already got a dye for the griffi though ^^
It's a very surface level fix for individual pets. My Forgotten Heretic vulnyx project is too far along to do anything about the colors without it being too costly, since I hadn't noticed how inaccurate they were until visible traits started showing up. (I guess I'll end up dyeing the final pairs and just leaving the extreme variance in the meantime) From what I've understood, getting the option to reroll colors was introduced so that dyed tagged or purebreds that diverted from the actual colors could be reset. I don't think players should have to do that for undyed tagged - the colors shouldn't be so inaccurate that a player would need to try for different colors.

I do agree that the colors should be tighter for themed. How many dyes do you think it would take to fix your final pairs? I'll help ya out. I have over 250,000 scales. It's not much off of me to help you if I can since I've got so much.

Yeah, I'm sure. Any idea how many you'd need?

The colors may eventually even out, so at most probably 4 for 2 pairs?

I'll just send you ten in case they decide to give you a hard time. Let me know if it doesn't work out.
