It took a bit, but Knuckles promptly returned with the knife. He carefully turned it around in his hand so that he was holding the flat of the blade and offered the hilt to Fangs.

(Okay, okay, I should point this out. When somebody hands you a knife, you're supposed to grab it and say thank you once you have a firm grip. It's polite, but the idea is that saying thank you lets the other person know that it's safe for them to let go. Like, they don't want you accidentally dropping it on their feet.)
