Making sure I have all my fighters, I look around for healing herbs and strange things.

You find plenty of healing herbs. You notice a hatch where the end of the shadow is

I stick the herbs in my backpack and then head for the hatch.

You open the hatch and see a cobwebbed staircase leading down.

The hatch stays open. it's the only light that enters the stairwell.
